Default Can I ovulate while on progesterone?

I know I've seen people write about this on here but I couldn't find any of the posts and the word "progesterone" was too broad for the search.

I was wondering if it is possible to ovulate while taking Prometrium. My doc wants to start me on it if I do not ovulate by cd18. I am on cd16 right now on my 50 mg Clomid cycle. I think I o'ed last month around cd22. Can I still o late if I take the progesterone? I understand that it is normally produced by the corpus luteum after ovulation.

Or have any of you ovulated and conceived while on Prometrium?

    Thanks for any replies!

I'm pretty sure the answer is no. If I recall correctly, once you start taking the progesterone, your LH levels start to decrease quickly. No LH, no ovulation.

I'm thinking that your doctor wants you to start the progesterone by that point to trigger your next cycle as quickly as possible.

Yeah, you shouldn't be taking provera or prometruim if theres a possibility you could be pregnant. Think about it like this: if you ovulated CD22 previously and do the same this time, then the prometrium will be getting your uterine lining ready to shed at the same time that that baby bean is wanting to implant! That doesn't work!!! I would maybe mention to your doc that you ovulate late on the clomid (which is quite common with clomid, I've heard), and are worried about taking it to early and sabotaging yourself! Make sense?

Don 't some people have to take the progesterone to make sure they keep the pregnancy? From what I remember, as long as you test and are not pg before you quit taking the progesterone you should be OK. Definitely check with your Dr though.
I agree with KM though, I think being declared that you haven't o'd by day 18 is too early. Some Dr's don't get that though... I had a nurse tell me today that if I was going to O with the clomid it would happen by day 14. I tried to tell her that I know a lot of people who O later, but she wouldn't hear it.
    Good luck to you!

The difference is that when people take it during pregnancy, they only take it until their placenta takes over the making of it. That is at 10-12 weeks. So, to stop taking the progesterone at that point in a pregnancy does not cause a miscarriage, because your body has started making it on its own.

You will not o if you are taking prometruim, provera, NPC, or any other type of progesterone. Progesterone is the hormone that sustains a pg, so once you start taking progesterone, your body thinks that you o'ed, and that you could be pg. Prometruim is prescribed to many, many women after a confirmed o. If you have low progesterone, it will help bring your prog levels up, therefore hopefully preventing m/c. You should not stop taking prometrium unless you are very sure of a BFN or talk to your dr.

Brightflower...in your situation, cd18 is way too early to count a clomid cycle out. If you are patient enough to wait a few more days, even a week, then I would. You never know, you could very easily O any day and the prometrium will just stop that from happening. Have you ever asked for a HCG shot (trigger)? That's the only thing that would get me to o while on clomid.

    Hey,
Thanks everyone for your replies! No O yet and I think I'll just wait it out awhile longer before starting any Prometrium.
    Here's hoping!!

brightflower- Why is your Dr wanting you to start the prometrium so early anyway? Are your cycles pretty irregular and he's just trying to get them regulated? Just curious!
