Call your Dr. I was on a SUPER heavy period in high school that lasted a month, finally my mom brought me to the gyno and she gave me some meds. In retrospect, I think they were BCP, but I didn't know that then and my mom didn't tell me. I just took one month's worth and it stopped my period.

I too get periods like this.

This last time, its lasted over 4 weeks, but its different somehow, not like a normal period for me. Im quite worried, not sure what to do.

Last time the Dr gave me tablets to stop it, but Id rather they found out why it was happening.

    Any advice girls?

    Thanks

Which is why I said please make sure to take iron supplements if you haven't already. And I agree with MsMedical's quote entirely.

When I don't stop the "abnormal uterine bleeding" as my doc always puts it, they give me a prescription for Provera to stop the bleeding

I've had the same problem several times. About six months ago it was so bad I actually went to the ER. Whats funny is that all these tests were done & I had all these exams done on me but they never could tell me what it was, just that I needed to call my gyno. So I go to see my gyno, they do an ultrasound, exams & everything. They still don't know what it was or what it is causing it. It seemed like my entire reproductive system was coming out every hour. I've had them last between a month & two months, so I finally went back on the metform the way it supposed to be taken & the bleeding finally stopped after a month & so I've just decided to stay on it. I'll be glad when the "all knowing doctors" can finally figure out what's going on w/all of us! Hope things get better for you sweetie!

I have had lots of long bleeds. The only thing that has worked for me is metformin. Even a double dose of BCP didn't work.
I agree with the pp's, go to your Dr, preferably a gyn or endo who is familiar with hormone imbalances/PCOS, get on some iron, ask about metformin and do not let your Dr/s disregard the importance of solving the problem rather than ignoring it!
Good luck and please keep us posted!

Hmmm, iron supplements. Why didn't I think of that? How does it help though. I too suffer from periods which come on and last 3 weeks or more. Then they go off for 2 weeks and come right back on and stay for another 2 or 3 weeks.

i bled for four months strait.. the doctors put me on BCP and i bled right through it. I just waited it out, it was the worst time of my life. I agree you need to take iron and get it looked in to ASAP.

First of that sucks and I am sorry that, that happens to you.

Iron is in your Red Blood Cells...excessive bleeding (among other things) deplete the RBC or hemoglobin ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemoglobin ) which means that it takes away from your Iron and will give you symptoms of anemia...fatigue (EXTREME), muscle cramps
    ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anemia ).

Taking the Iron won't STOP the bleeding but it helps to deal with the symptoms that you get when you bleed so much.

Also eating dark green leafy vegetables help like spinach, brussel sprouts and stuff like that.

Also take the Iron with vitamin C if you can it helps your body to absorb it.

I have anemia for reasons no one really knows...BUT taking Iron daily helps to keep the level up. Anyone suffering from heavy periods and long bleeds should try taking Iron daily...although too much Iron can constipate you or cause other problems...but if you are bleeding THAT heavily it could only help...but for your best interest...talk to your Dr first.

I just recently have been having long bleeds or then no bleeds & my GYN always gives me Provera. Seems to work regardless if I'm bleeding or go months without a cycle.

I also take extra iron when I bleed excessively.

    Wishing you the best!

I can really relate to your problem, I was diagnosed in 1998 and have went through this off and on for as long as I can remember. I had to go to the RE on Mon. for this very reason. Ultrasound shows endometrial lining still 13mm. Usually Provera helps, but this x I'm afraid it didn't, currently I have been bleeding for approx 3 months and with extreme pelvic pain. I'm kind of at my wits end, as well. RE started me on Yaz and increased my Glucaphage to 2000mg daily, if this doesn't help RE will do a D&C. You really need to see your doctor ASAP. Best of luck to you, I hope you feel better soon.

From what I have been told, I was hemmoraging constantly, do to the endometrosis. Metformin does help, and every once in a while it will happen. Iron will always help with extra blood loss.
