    Default Starting Metformin While Pregnant

I just posted this wonderful, long post for info but the internet ate it. lol

I'm new to this forum and I was led here in my search for information about starting met in early pregancy. I just found out last week that I'm pregnant again! I have been on met off and on for about 7 years and was on it when I concieved both of my daughters. I continued to take it for the duration of my pregnancies.

I was taking metformin until recently when I have having some stomach issues so we decided to stop met to see if that is what was causing it ( it wasn't). I have managed to concieve without met this time amd I'm very nervous. Every pregnancy I've had with it has ended in a loss. I feel that the pros of met during pregnancy far out way the risks for me I just can't find anything stating the safety of starting while pregnant or if it's recommended for pregnant women with PCOS to start metformin during pregnancy.

My dr is great at listening to the info I find but he really doesn't know much about the use of metformin for PCOS or during pregnancy. His info tells him that it should not be used during pregnancy but we all know that is not accurate for women with PCOS.

I'm looking for any experience anyone has with starting met during early pregnancy. ( I'm probably about 5 weeks at this point) Has anyone here started met during early pregnancy? Please share any of your knowledge!

from what I know you shouldnt unless you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes and then only if the dr prescribes it as its not been tested much on pregnant women. personally I dont think it would be a wise decision to start it if you werent on it when you got pg.

Hey i would love to have an answer for the above question also - i know it was from ages ago! but i just found out i'm 4 weeks pregnant. i stopped metformin about 4 weeks ago and got preg taking femara... now i dont know if i should start taking metformin again to reduce my chances of miscarriage....my specialist told me to not worry about taking it but my doctor told me to start taking it...so confused!!!

Does anyone have any experience or advice about starting metformin once pregnant???

    Thanks!!

I was on and off Met when i got prego with #2 and stayed on it until 13 weeks.. I was not on met when i got prego with #3 and stayed off of it.. I have been told if I wasnt on it when i got pregnant to not start it.
I think if you had been off for a short time then maybe start it up again.. #3 has been fine with out Met and #1 I was also not on Met.

    Hi ladies!

Just to update I ended up not starting the met with that pregnancy but it looked like all indications were pointed at not starting it in early pregnancy. Just to clarify though, I did take met through my previous 2 pregnancies from preconception to birth.

I gave birth to a healthy full term little girl ( well not so little.. she was over 10 pounds!). So we did fine without it. Also . I'm currently 35 weeks pregnant and not on met at all. This baby is quite the surprise! lol

Good luck to all of you
