Default Metformin doesn't work for me - What should I do?

I took Metformin for 3 months. During that time I lost 2 lbs. but I was eating better and exercising. My menstrual cycles got further apart. And I felt really sick for the first month and then just a general not feeling good after that. My doctor took me off of it since it isn't working. Is there anything else that will help?

What's your dose? When you say eating better how? Low carb, IR diet? How resrictive is your diet? Do you have insulin resistance? What is your goal? To regulate cycles, TTC, etc.?

Thanks for the response. My dose was 1000mg per day. I was eating the Low GI diet for a month, didn't lose any weight and stopped because I was feeling so sick. My doctor said that I had insulin resistance. After a blood test she said my insulin is 7, but I don't know what that means and didn't think to ask since she had already said I am insulin resitant. My goal with the met was to get pregnant and hopefull loose 10-15 lbs.

If they used the same scale they did for my insulin 7 is not IR. I believe over about 15 is. Most women are on 1500mg or higher 1000mg does not do much for most people. Met can make you sick but I made sure to always take mine with food and that seemed to help a lot. I have noticed I seem to drop weight when I eat a balanced diet with plenty of protein and subtitute things like nuts and cheese for crackers, etc. when I want a snack.

I'm one of the few lucky women that 1000mg was enough to get my cycles. But Kellie is right most ladies are on 1500 or more. I did not lose any weight (I already eat very well) but I did notice that if I dont take it with food I feel like crap. It also can take up to 6mo to get results so you might think about giving it another chance. Good Luck.

    Default Metformin

I took metformin and it didn't work for me either. I was on 1500mg a day. So I know how you feel. I gained weight on it, and my tummy hurt so bad I couldn't leave the house at all! I haven't have a period in a year. I just recently switched doctors. My new doctor is a military doctor. And she seems to be quick on her feet. One visit with her and I know now that I am anemic, and I have an appointment with a fertility doctor next month. I am very hopeful, and pushing for them to do something ASAP beings my husband is in the Navy and will be deploying later this year for 10 months. So we do not get along of time to try. So I REALLY needed a doctor who would understand that, I am almost 30 and would like to have our first child before I am 31. So I am very happy to have the doctor I have now.

If your insulin was a 7, and it was the same as the scale we are thinking of, then that is a great number. I am IR, and my fasting insulin can be anywhere from 39-55, which is way high.
