Default Maca Root - Who's tried it...and what did you think?

I've been hearing a lot of psitives about Maca Root...almost seems too good to be true. For those of you who have tried it, can you tell me your experiences with it...good or bad? Also, how much do you take, when, etc....

I tried maca for a little while, but you have to cycle it as it can be far too strong when taken in the way westerners take it.
The people who grow the maca eat it as you would eat potatoes or other such root vegetables, so they do not get the concentrated amount that are in the capsules of powder that we get. Apparently the best way to use it is in small doses, and to cycle it. So maybe take it for 4 days, then have 4 off, 4 on 4 off, etc...

Same thing for the guys, cycle it. The side effects can be terrible if you take too much and do not cycle it. For instance, my lovely man took it every day for two weeks and began having stomach cramps, diahrea, then as the symptoms got worse, he got tired and began to vomit. He can now not take even a bit of it so we got rid of it.
When I took it it made my bbs hurt. I did not do enough research on maca before taking it and I wish I had because it could have been of better use to me and my partner. Now that we have taken too much too soon, we can't touch it again, it makes Adam instantly sick.
That is just our experience with it, and by no means the norm. I would encourage you to research it and learn before you dive in like we did, as although it is a vegetable extract, it is bloody potent!
    Good luck!

both me and dh took it (he had male infertility problems) we were told 2 months ago that IUI would not even work for us.

However yesterday I got a BFP. We had both been on Maca for just under 2 months. I am convinced it is Maca that helped me get pregnant.

I've taken it before. Took it for about a month straight.
    Took it in powder form.
First, the taste is just BLEH. It's not awful awful, but it's enough to make me gag sometimes.
I think it helped me a little. It helped with the discoloration in my armpits and my acne seemed to clear up as well.
I think I would've experienced more benefits if I had taken it longer.

My husband and I both took for about 4-6 months a few years ago. I didn't find it helped me at all unfortunately. It didn't help my husband with fertility (he has male factor but we later found out his male factor is caused by a balanced translocation of 2 of his chromosomes). However, when my husband was taking it, it made him very.... how do I put this tactfully... 'randy'. It was kinda funny at first, lol. I've heard success stories. The only way to know if it will work for you is to try it. In my opinion it won't hurt to try. Good Luck!

ETA, I don't remember how much we took but it was in pill form and we both took it every day.

I have a funny story about Maca! I ordered the powder form online and started taking it! I was making shakes out of it and putting it in yogurt or pudding. The taste was horrible, but I did my best to add it to something that tasted decent. I ordered a pretty big bag, so I tossed all of it in a canister, like the ones you put your flour, sugar, rice, etc. in. And I was able to keep it pretty fresh that way. Well, one day I put it in my pudding and FINALLY the taste didn't bother me anymore! I went on for about 2-3 weeks ENJOYING it in my pudding at night!

Then one day while I was cooking dinner, I went to grab a cup of whole wheat flour from my canister, only to realize, that I grabbed the maca instead..... or is that the flour...... maybe it's the maca..... hmmm? Then I realized that I had been putting WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR in my pudding and NOT maca!!!! I was so disappointed in myself!

Needless to say Maca (or Whole Wheat Flour) didn't help my cycles at all. I thought ya'll may enjoy that!!!!!

Maca really messed up my cycles. I tended to have cycles that were like 32-37 days, and when I took maca I went for like 50+ days with no O, and no AF. I finally stopped it and got AF right away (still w/out an O). Then next cycle I didn't take Maca and I had a normal cycle, so I am pretty sure that is what messed things up.

I think just like with any supplement or medicine, depending on what your underlying issue is it may or may not work for you, so it probably wouldn't hurt to try it for a cycle or two and see if it helps.

I took 1500mg a day for two cycles and fell pregnant on my 2nd cycle using it. DH took 2000mg a day I think. We bought the capsules, as I heard the powder tastes rank.

I have no idea if it was the maca or maybe the other supplements dh was taking finally started working, but we were only told just over two months prior that we would be unlikely to be successful even with IUI. So as you can imagine it was a huge shock to us both, when we got that BFP.

I definately recommend trying it. It can mess up your cycles to begin with, but that is usually a good sign that it is sorting out what is going wrong with the hormones in your body, of course your cycles should then start to go into a regular pattern. We even noticed DH's sperm was a different consistancy after he had been taking it a while..

Aida, i have to tell you that you seem very calm about the PG thing. Has it not set it yet? Brain still trying to rap around it?

Did anyone get really really um... horny from taking maca? I'm not sure whether it is this or progesterone cream or both, but two days ago, I started having a lot of pressure that made me feel arroused all the time for hours. Last month, the first month I started maca, I had this at night for one night practically all night and now this month, I had it at night a few hours and unfortunately at work for a few hours. There is actually something called Constant Arrousal Syndrome, and I think it may be tied to PCOS as I have had small spells of this before but always at night and not as bad. Maca causes a lot of sharp sensations in that area that also I think contribute to this, and progesterone cream seems to increase them. I think I am going to ease of maca because I did not get a period at all last month, just a lot of brownish discharge. Another poster said this is what happeend to her on maca, and after three months, she had no cycle on it when like me, her cycles were fairly regular.

I don't know, but it seems like since I've been dxed with PCOS and taking things for it, my cycles have actually been worse off! BC made me have cycles but made me crazy. Same with met. Maybe I'm not giving the natural stuff time to work, but so far it's not working and gives me unfavorable side effects. I have never skipped more than 2 periods at a time when on nothing, though I started into taking stuff b/c my doctor predicted my cycles would get sparser as time went on, and I don't like symptoms like mood swings I get on months my cycles skip.
