Default Severe Nasal Congestion cold...help me breathe!

Well ladies I have a bad cold. I've been laid up on the couch for a few days dreaming about cold medication I can't take. I've used three boxes of Kleenex and keep refilling my humidifier. I've employed salene nasal spray, Vicks vapor rub and breathe right strips.

Not much is really working. I'm praying to have at least one nostril open at all times.

I called my OB who said OK to take sudafed, claratin, Benadryl sinus. WTF? Sudafed? As is in they use it to make meth so u have to buy it at the RX counter.

I'm not super comfortable with that. So I haven't taken anything. But I'm getting desperate.

Thoughts on how to get stuff to drain? I'm worried I'm going to get a sinus or ear infection the way the fluid is backing up in there. Luckily, still all clear for now but not sure for how long...

So my ob said safe to take Tylenol cold, so I did that. Without meds I recommend getting some eucalyptus and spearmint Epsom salts, shake into a super hot running shower. I will steam up the bathroom then take a long hot shower breathing in the minty steam. It's the same thing we have to do for our kids as babies, except just sitting on the bathroom floor or giving them a bath after we steam It up depending on how little. If you have chest crud I just learned a heating pad on your chest and upper back will get that stuff to come up.also pregnancy rhinitis is normaland not something you can really clear permanently until baby is born. I got bronchitis and has the stuffy nose/cold junk for months until ds2 was born. It cleared up on its own within days of him being born.

Pseudoephedrine is pregnancy category b, I looked it up. So yes, you can take it Unfortunately for me, it's not compatible with breastfeeding, I tried taking it when the whole family got sick when Sam was a month old and it killed my suply for like 3 days and gave me a horribly painful blocked duct, so enjoy being able to take it while you can. I'm coming down with another cold now (thank you day care) and just have to suffer

Default Severe Nasal Congestion cold...help me breathe!

Katie's idea sounds amazing. I would get bad sinus congestion too and just being in a steaming shower helped. I'm sure adding the eucalyptus and spearmint will be much more beneficial. When I didn't want to sit in a shower, I just boiled water and put my face over it (be careful as to not burn yourself) with a towel covering my head so the steam can co directly into my nose. That would help. I also did a netti pot to help with the congestion and had saline nasal sprays with me. It sucks but hang in there. Hope you find some relief!!!

I just endured my cold!!! I did it without meds also! It took a LONG time, especially with no relief, but I feel better now (a week later). I totally rested, drank a ton of liquids, checked for fever every day, and snuggles with my DH.
I hope you feel better soon

For my cold I just took robitussin and benadryl and used the heck out of my humidifier. On the list my Dr gave me you can take: Tylenol Sinus, Sudafed (plain), Triaminic Orange, Robitussin (plain or DM), Naldecon DX adult liquid, mucinex, and Zyrtec.

Have you tried a netti pot or sinus rinse? It can be a little easier to tolerate than saline spray because you can use warm water.

My re has sudafed and Tylenol on the safe list.

I just got over a sinus infection and was running a low grade fever so they threw me on antibiotics but aside from that I took some Tylenol and flushed my sinuses twice daily. The NeilMed sinus wash works wonders for congestion and pressure.

Neilmed---that is the sinus rinse I use too. Davidswife...they sell them at Walgreens and come in a kit that has the pre-measured saline to add to warm water.

Are we allowed to take echinacea to reduce the duration of a cold? I can't help you with the blocked sinuses, unfortunately. I am not even sick, and I am totally blocked up.

So sorry you are sick! I agree to try the netipot. I got one at our CVS with the packets of saline and it's amazing!! I got more relief from it than any type of medication that I've taken in the past because it drains all the fluid out of your nose! I also used some VICKS vapor rub (mostly smelled it from the container) and Halls cough drops.

I have heard to NOT take echinacea during pregnancy, but I can't remember why. For me my cold was so early on (around 8-9 weeks) I was afraid to take ANYTHING so I just stuck to lemon/honey water (hot) and the netipot and after a few days got on just fine.

Default Severe Nasal Congestion cold...help me breathe!

    Ladies,

I got a neti pot and I'm going to try it today. There seems to be fluid in my ears now too but no pain. I also don't have a fever so I'm good there. I just don't want to get an ear infection.

I'm on day 4 of being off work and laying on the couch and I'm going stir crazy.

I did lather my chest in Vicks and take a shower and that helped for a couple hours. I'm just waiting it out. Still haven't taken any pills.

    Thanks for ur suggestions!

Just be careful not to blow just one side of your nose(and holding the other side closed) after using the netti pot. Especially if your ear are causing you some pain. Also, they say you should only use distilled water for risk of a certain type of bacteria. I think it would be pretty rare in the US, but you can never be too careful.

I hope you start to feel better soon.

Drinking a lot of water will help loosen everything up. Steam helps so much as well. I have a small facial steamer that I use for sinus infections, but a hot cup of tea will do the same thing and you can take sips at the same time. My family doctor's wife always used to say to sit in the washroom and run the shower until the wallpaper starts to peel - that's how hot and for how long you need to be in there for the humidity to kick in. I don't have wall paper in my bathroom, but you get the idea, LOL!
