Hi to all..I am so relieved to finally have a diagnosis! I am 32..no children and since I was in my early 20's my periods have been very irregular (sometimes as long as 9 months with out it). I have never been pregnant, even though my first marriage of 5 years we tried for the entire 5 years and currently my new husband and I have been trying for almost 2 years.
I finally went to a new OB/GYN who was recommeded by a friend (who was able to diagnose her and she now has a 1 yr old baby!). On my first visit he said I have many signs of PCOS. (irregular period, infertility, some facial hair, and uncontrollable weight). I went for all the tests (ultrasounds and bloodwork) and yesterday I was officially diagnosed w/PCOS. My ultrasound showed polycyctic ovaries and my bloodwork shows Insulin Resistance (fasting was normal levels but the blood test 2 hours after taking the glucose drink was elevated to 160-which he stated is almost borderline diabetic). He prescribed Metformin 500mg twice a day for first month (after first month wants to check my liver) then 500mg 3 x a day indefinately.
My two concerns at the moment are the side effects to Met and what type of diet to be following. He mentioned I should follow a Insulin resistance diet as close as possible. What foods will be the best choices to help with the side-effects but to keep with in an I.R. diet? I am 5'4" and at the moment weigh 180lbs. I have gone from 215lbs in 2001 to 155lbs this past May to 180lbs now. My diet has pretty much stayed the same, but my weight never does. I was able to loose the 60 lbs a few years ago with daily high aerobic exersize and the minute I stopped, the pounds started to creep on. Im hoping this diagnosis and treatment will help some what to regulate EVERYTHING!!
If anyone has any advise for me, I would appreciate it. Thanks:p![]()
