Unhappy Recently diagnosed with PCOS-doctor says no to antidepressant

    Hi
I have just been newly diagnosed with PCOS. I told my PCP that I felt very depressed because of my weight, unable to get pregnant, etc. I said I thought I needed an antidepressant. He looked at me like I had grown another head. He said no antidepressants, just exercise and you will feel better. I have a feeling he thinks I am a big baby. I hope it gets better soon. I am having a hard time coping with everything. I just can't seem to get myself together. We have been ttc for 8 yrs. My sister-in-laws keep having babies every year! I hope someone out there has some advice for me.

If you really feel that you are depressed, you MUST go to a different doctor. Did he even ask you what your symptoms of depression were?? He can't just say no without asking the questions.

If you are just upset because of babies etc that is one thing, but clinical depression is another.

Best of luck, and keep us posted!

Default Doctor says no to antidepressant

    Hi
Thanks for your reply. He didn't ask any questions concerning the way that I am feeling. He just said it is natural to feel depressed in reference to being unable to lose weight, miscarriages, having a hard ttc, etc. He says he doesn't want to put me on antidepressants because he feels that since we are working the other problems out, this one will resolve itself. I honestly don't know if I am just said about not having a little one or if I am truly clinically depressed. Thats what I wanted him to tell me. Maybe things will get better as he says as my physical problems are improving.

I told my doctor yesterday that I am so depressed that some mornings I dont even want to get out of bed......he shrugged it of and didnt even comment on it.

He is a good doctor, but I dont think alot of them understand what to do when they are faced with that.

I would say if you feel you are depressed, then you should go to another doc for a second opinion. You don't want to leave depression untreated, and if you are depressed, there are things and drugs that can help you get back to feeling good again...........

    Good luck

Doctors can be pretty upsetting because they are sort of an authority figure and it hurts your feelings when they don't seem to respect you back. But of COURSE "upsetting" isn't nearly as important of a thing as them not helping you when you need it. I had the opposite problem however. I went to the docs with physical pain and obvious symptoms and was told I was only Stressed, Anxious and overly Worried about my health. They tried to give me some happy pills instead of trying to find the cause of my physical illness. Sure my body is Stressed because I'm sick. Sure I look Anxious because I'm so sick that I shake constantly. Sure I'm Worried about my health, but in a proper manner of concern that is warranted. Inside I'm still happy and calm and hopeful. I don't need those pills and the doctor had no right to act offended that I wouldn't take them.
Well that is a little story of mine, but I suppose the point of it is that some doctors really do not care enough to examine you carefully and these are NOT the doctors that you need. Also, if you feel you are having emotional problems, you might see an expert in that field instead of an MD. Like a counselor or phsych that is really familiar with the workings of the mind and heart. They may be able to help you without meds, and if not, they would probably have a much more informed opinion about prescribing them. Good luck with whatever happens! I tend to ramble. haha

Find a therapist or psycologist, I had my first appointment last night. It was GREAT!!!! He listened and was helpful. I just cried and babled and it felt good. there was no judgement. He said meds may not help me, but it is still to early to know.

    Good Luck

I say go to another doctor. My doc is wonderful and she gave me a test pack as a way to get out of the rut. I was lucky that they helped me get out of it and I didn't need anymore.

But one thing your doctor says is true. Exercise does help. That's what has kept the depression away for me. It dosen't mean, however, that you don't need antidepressants.

Some doctors ignore depression, others are really way too eager to prescibe anti-depressants.

I take Wellbutrin, and while it didn't make me happy...it made me functional enough to start working on myself.

Exercise does help me feel better about myself though. Your doc is right that it would help. Also, find other outlets for your frustrations, concerns, etc. Journaling has been great for me. I've also recently started meditation, which has been good for me. My mind was constantly going before, and now that mental noise isn't so bad.
