    Default How Offensive!!

    Hey girls,

I just have to have a rant about something that is happening in a very popular weekly women's magazine here in Australia. New Weekly magazine takes EVERY opportunity to "out" famous women for having facial hair. It drives me INSANE!!

Now usually they do it on their "Look Closer" page. This is usually where they spot someone has a sweat stain on their dress, toilet paper stuck to their shoe, their skirt tucked in their undies or those sort of things. Now I don't have a problem with those things - we've all done it and it's embarrassing but harmless.

But when you start "outing" women for having facial hair - that's disgusting! Picking on women for something they can't help is despicable! So far they've done it to Beyonce, the blonde woman from CSI (can't remember her name sorry) and one of the contestants from Big Brother here in Australia.

I plan to write a letter to the editor - I just think it's SO wrong!

I agree with Armastama...This mag is probably run by men, photographed by men...What kinds of evil things are they hiding. Its just like a typical bully - -You have to let everyone know about someone elses faults because you are afraid of showing your own.

there is a similar magazine in South Africa and the UK called "heat." and they do many of the same terrible things...

they did a big story on how paris hilton, christina aguilera, and victoria beckham are all losing their hair. i thought it was terrible...and a pretty stupid way to encourage more readers!

That is so mean! I can't believe they would do something like that. I mean, people do embarrassing things, like t.p. on the shoe, but facial hair that is crossing the line!! That makes me so mad!

just another example of people picking on others to make themselves feel better. but it's a little too close to home since i have that facial hair problem myself. i always hear jokes about women having facial hair as if to say they're butch and not feminine. it's ignorant and nasty.

Who knows though!! It could be run by women.....women who are vain, and think they are better than everyone else...and feel the need to peck at other women to make themselves look better.

Girls it's a magazine run by women of all things! They're proud to say they have a 95% female staff on this magazine!

You'd think they'd be beyond all this rubbish, being women who cop enough cr*p from everyone else, but no - they see perfectly fit to "out" women with facial hair!

    It's disgusting!

I'll post a copy of my letter to the editor once it's done, and will let you know if I get any replies.

    Cheers

Maybe they should start in their own office looking for women to "out". You KNOW there are women there who pluck, tweeze, and/or shave. They're also bound to have a few who bleach their mustaches. You don't have that many women on staff and not have some experiencing similar things as us.

Disgusting! It's pitiful when people have to tear down others and point out things about them just to make themselves feel better.

I think it is awful but at the same time I guess maybe in a perverse sort of way it can make some of us feel a bit more reassured in the fact that we are not alone and nobody is perfect. Victoria Beckham has stated openly that she has PCOS, so it is nice to know that there are celebrities out there who are prepared to put their hands up about the condition! However, I do think it is horrible to try to undermine other people's confidence by drawing attention to their 'flaws' (are they really flaws though?) Victoria Beckham's hair may be thinning due to PCOS or maybe from having tight hair extensions or maybe she has the extensions because her hair is thin? She often gets slated for being too thin but then we are always told 'lose weight and your symptoms will go away' (I wonder how thin cysters feel when they hear this!) She has certainly had problems with hair loss and acne etc like the rest of us. It's bad enough when you think someone is looking at you and commenting behind your back but I can't imagine how soul destroying it is to see that kind of thing splashed across the pages of a cheap magazine or tabloid newspaper!

At least we arent the only ones. And luckily we dont have to have our facial hair plastered on a magazine for the world to see. And how easy it would be to digitally make chin hair on anyone in a photo.

It's one thing for a famous woman to choose to talk about something on her own (be it PCOS or anything else) but to be OUTED in a magazine just to make fun of her is disgusting!

Solshine I reckon if they secretly polled their own office, they'd find at least 65% of the women there had some facial hair that they plucked, bleached, waxed, shaved whatever. It bugs me that it's ok for them to just publish photographs of celebrities and make fun of them, yet if anyone said anything about them, I bet a lawsuit would be in hand!

I'm just working on my letter to the editor now!

    Hey girls!

Here is the letter I've just sent New Weekly magazine.....

    Dear NW

Why do you feel the need to "out" women with facial hair? Over the past month, you've done so to Beyonce, the blonde woman from CSI and Michelle from Big Brother. Now I understand your "Look Closer" page is a little gag page so that we can laugh at the foibles of famous folks. I don't have a problem with some starlet having toilet paper stuck to her shoe, boob tape sticking out of her dress, her undies showing or some actor with his bum crack showing etc. It's embarrassing, but it's nothing really and it happens to all of us. But what is it with "outing" women who have a little facial hair?

Firstly, it's not cool making fun of people's physical attributes. People can't help having a bit of facial hair, or strange shaped body bits, or cellulite or whatever. Secondly it's childish. It's reminiscent of *****ing in high school that girls carry on with so that they can make themselves feel better. And finally - people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. NW is a predominately female staffed magazine... and I will tell you now that approximately 65% of women use facial wax, bleach, creams and potions. So two thirds of your own staff have some facial hair that they're probably embarrassed about and would be horrified if someone outed them for having it. So what gives you the right to do it to other people?

Grow up NW. Bring us interesting and entertaining articles and photographs. Don't carry on like a bunch of *****y Year 9 school girls humiliating others just to make yourselves feel better.

    Regular NW Reader

that makes me so mad. When you send that letter you should send them an info pack on pcos and maybe they'll get the hint that some women just cant help it and that it is no laughing matter.
