Thread: Buffalo?

    Default Buffalo?

Anyone have an opinion about ground buffalo? Supposedly you can use it the same as ground beef, but it's lower in fat and higher in protein. But how does it taste?

Buffalo tastes awesome! I absolutely love it!
I can't find it too often, but definately get it when I find it.

It is leaner, not as greasy, and I find it fills me up more (and I eat less of it too).

I Love Buffalo, The do a lottery for Buffalo permits for hunting every year and we enter every year and usually get a permit every couple of years. Each year that we have gotten a permit we have gotten a buffalo and we have most of it ground up like ground beef, and then do a few steaks and roasts. I think that Buffalo tastes better than ground beef, not to mention that it's healthier. It doesn't have a gamey taste to it and it is just real tender and delicious.

They just started carrying it in Publix down here and I LOVE it! It tastes about the same as regular beef and when I cook it on my George Foreman grill there's little to no drips of fat and juice. It's also cheaper than some cuts of meat.

I love that you can make burgers from the ground buffalo without having to add bread crumbs (carbs) and eggs. I just add Tony Cachere's, some liquid smoke and maybe some Dale's and pop it on the grill. Yummy!!

I also like the taste of it. It's a lot like beef but a little different, and like Ariella said, not gamey. To give you an idea of my tastes, I like beef and lamb, but hate venison.

Give it a try, it's tasty.

Buffalo is very good and I highly recommend it! My husband and I love it! It's not as greasy as ground beef and it tastes even better. If you can get it, you definately should try it! We are lucky enough to be able to get it directly from a meat market, but depending on where you are, it may be harder to get. Let us know what you think!

I tried some...and I wasn't thrilled. It was like dried out hamburger.

Shiphrah - I'm surprised at that. Maybe it wasn't cooked properly? Buffalo is usually so good.

Buffalo will dry out if it's cooked too fast at too hot a temperature. That is quite possibly what happened. We learned that from experience.

I agree. You have to cook it low and slow to get a good tasting buffalo burger. I usually use ground buffalo in my spaghetti sauce. I brown it and mix it with onions and toss it into the sauce. Much less greasy than it's ground beef counterpart. I love it!

I LOVE buffalo, it's so much better for you than beef. DH and I won't eat beef anymore, but we will occasionally eat buffalo. Not only is it higher in protein and lower in fat, the fat that it does contain is higher in EFAs!

I still have 1/2# in the freezer...so I haven't given up yet. When I tried it the first time, I didn't use any seasonings and cooked it on the George Foreman. Maybe if I spice it up a tad and fry it? It MUST be good if y'all like it so well.

Mmmmm, buffalo. I've had a steak at a restaurant, and it was so good. I also like ostrich, which is a red meat, high in protein and has less fat and cholesterol than chicken.
