I wouldn't fool around with Nizoral if your hair loss is that severe. You should really start using Rogaine if you don't wanna end up like me. Same thing happened to me and I had put so much faith in Nioxin, Nizoral, and other products that simply did not preserve my hair. I am now stuck with wearing wigs forever until I get my hair transplant.
Nizoral can work for people with mild hair loss but once you start losing patches and start noticing a dramatic difference in hair loss, it's time for something stronger.
I was taking Rogaine (men's strength) and it did regrow some of what I had lost. However, i waited absolutely too long to start it and it didn't give me the results I had hoped for. My dermatologist told me that had i started when i first noticed the handfuls of hair falling out, it would have worked so much better. Rogaine seems to work because of its vasodilator properties. DHT shrinks and chokes follicles, and Rogaine seems to combat this by swelling the follicle's tiny microvascular structures.
Recently I went back to the dermatologist and he said there is nothing else left for me to do and that I am a perfect candidate for a hair transplant. I'm sick of investing so much money in wigs and just wish I would have done something a lot sooner instead of wasting my time and money with these shampoos.
There have been a small amount of women who have been prescribed propecia - this works very well but you can not take it if you are TTC. Matter of fact, some DR's won't even prescribe it if you don't have your tubes tied and there is a small chance you can become pregnant.
For women it is recommended that they take Rogaine and the men's strength works the best. If you use Rogaine, you can also use a DHT removing shampoo such as nioxin. It's very important to use a shampoo which removes DHT from the scalp so that it does not bind to your hair follicles. The buildup of DHT is the reason that we experience the hair loss that we do. Some hair follicles slowly shrink and die in the presence of DHT. This causes 95% of all hair loss.
When I was in Germany I started using Pantostin - it contains Alfatradiol and it regrew back so much of my hair! however, once I got here, it started falling back out because Alfatradiol has not been approved by the FDA in the USA and therefore is not on the market here. Sucks, huh? I had finally found a product that worked and was available at the pharmacy over the counter, but now that I am here, it's not available here.
Anyhow, if you are really worried about your hair loss, i really think you should have a dermatologist evaluate your scalp. This way you can get the best advice and prevent ending up with a huge bald spot like i now have.
Is your hair loss more on top or where is it? Mine is on top and fell out in the same area where men have their hair loss.
