NOT ttc....worried about getting pregnant? Ideas?

I'm wondering how much fertility is affected by PCOS. I know it is a big problem for some, but are there any 'numbers' at all on how hard it is to get pregnant? I'm on the pill and have PCOS, but I'm still paranoid about getting pregnant....ideas anyone?

Thank you! I think I'm just nervous about this since it's kind of 'new' to me. If I'm not on the pill, I don't get periods....I don't know if being on the pill makes one actually ovulate or just regulates hormones?

I disagree. I have read here that some women have more problems after being on the pill. It just hides your problems. I'm not sure if it regulates your hormones or not.

If I were you I would start eating right and maybe see about getting on Met.

well.... my mom (who I STRONGLY suspect has PCOS) had me totally unexpectedly... but then too 9 years to conceive my first sibling. So I guess it just depends on the month

i was like you... i took the bcp you may years... and had regular periods... when i went off i do not get periods at all..... i am know on Met only 500mgs a day and it is enough to regulate hormaones and make a huge difference in how i feel..... you are fine if you are taking you bcp properly... if you are still worried why don't you use condoms or a spemicide lube or something?

Thank you all....WDW, I am definitely NOT ttc now, trying to make sure it DOESN'T happen, so I'm just wondering if having PCOS affects the pill's effectiveness, or makes it more unlikely that I'd be able to get p, or whatnot. All of your advice has been very helpful, girls! I thought I would post since I know many of you ARE ttc and have had problems, so you would know about this kind of thing....I have no plans to have kids in the future, but I'm sure that could change, and I wish anyone who is trying the best.

btw: There are some women on here that got PG on the pill. I know a few of them said they were using it right at the time.

Hello

I just wanted to let you know that my best friend (who also has PCOS) can only GET pregnant on the pill. Apparently it raises her hormones just enough that it makes her more fertile.

Please don't freak out on me Marit, but I'm one of those oddballs that only gets pregnant on the pill or within a few months of coming off of it. My sister is the same and my mom had me while on the pill as well.

For most, the pill is VERY effective. The exact numbers for your particular pill should be listed in the little white paper you get with the pills. Take a bit of heart in that!

It seems to function oddly in some of us "hormonally challenged" women though, so if I were to give you advice I'd use a backup method as well. I see you are in Canada, so you have the glorious Today sponge available. I used that for years with success. Spermicidal foam as a backup has been working for my partner and I for years now, so all is not lost! I definitely understand your worries though.

I was on bcp for 7 years before ttc it took me 1 year after getting off bcp and clomid to get pregnant. So I think it just depends on the person. I too worried about getting pregnant all the time, just try not to worry, have faith that it will all turn out okay.

I got pregnant while on BCP and I took it like I was supposed to. I would use a backup method.

YEESH! What is it with all these people getting pregnant on the pill? My doctor told me I should have nothing to worry about! Are any of you, that the pill has failed, unable to have periods without it, like me?

For the most part, no I couldn't menstruate without either BCP or provera shots. I'd average about one AF a year. Now when I go off of BCP I'll either not get AF or she just won't pack up and leave for months (sigh).

This is why I think I get pregnant on the pill. The first time it happened I was only 18 and totally unprepared

The pill + at least one back up method hasn't failed me yet though.
