Thread: Electrolysis and results

    Default Electrolysis and results

I have been seeing alot of mention of laser treatments, but very few of Electrolysis and I was wondering how many of you ladies have Electrolysis done and how happy you are with results? I just found a wonderful Electrologist just down the street from me, she is the one who informed me that I may have PCOS because she has it as well. I had my second treatment today (all my lower belly hair removed and some on the sides) that took an hour, she is only charging me $40 an hour (its usually $55). The first time I went it was a free 15 minute trial treatment and I had her do my chin hairs, I broke out badly even though she used a gold probe and micro-flash on low..I know its because I have very very sensitive skin. SO I waited a month to save up money and went back to get my belly done, I just got back and feel so ecstatic as the hair is all gone for now! I know I need to go back every 3-4 weeks to have touch ups but its well worth the money as I know its permanent..on the other hand they havent proved laser to be permanent way of hair removal.

So how many of you have had Electrolysis, where did you get it done, how much was it for you, did you find it painful, and did you like the results? I am curious to know because although its a slower process and a bit uncomfortable for some (equivelant to getting a small tattoo IMO) I keep hearing only laser testimonies. If anyone lives in my area (southern NH) and wants a referral to a wonderful cheap comfortable place to get Electrology just message me and I will give you the info!

    Hi there,
I have electrolysis done every three weeks for 15 minutes or so. I used to have it for longer more regularly but with PCOS it is the kind of thing you have to keep on plugging away at because new hairs become terminal. My consultant told me that, as with laser, electrolysis works best when the hair is in growth cycle i.e. they need to zap it and pull it out with the piece on the end of the hair (I can't remember the special word for it) still attached. Otherwise it is less effective. So I have had to have a number of hairs re-zapped. Also, it works best when the current is high. This hurts more and can scab a little so finding what's right for you is important but some electrologists say that a low current can be ineffective on some people.
I had laser which didn't work at all so I am so grateful for electrolysis.

One of these days I'm going to try to get electrolysis.... I also think it might work better than laser.
    Me: 45
    Single, no children
No dx: all hormone levels "within normal limits"
Testosterone level: 44, but still have "hair problems"
    Meds: None
Exercise: walk 30 min. a day
Major symptoms: missed/absent AF, excessive facial/body hair, apple shape

    Be kind to one another!

electrolysis is working great for me. i've gone every week for 6 weeks, mainly for chin hairs. now i only get a few hairs total that grow in between sessions. it's helping a lot, and i've really seen very minimal regrowth. my electrolygist uses the blend method. i think electrolysis is better than laser, because it's permanent, and laser is not fully permanent. electrolysis works best when the facial/body hair is not too extensive though, since you have to do one hair at a time. also, if you're taking medicine to balance your hormones, like spironolactone and BCPs, you can hopefully prevent NEW hairs from forming, and therefore will not have to have electrolysis forever.

On the recommendation of one of the members here, Becoming Sarah, I went for my first electrolysis session this Thursday. I had the area below my bellybutton and my chin done. It took 1 hour and costed $100. I love that the chin hairs are gone!!! I had no break outs or anything, but I guess she wasn't using as much power on my, being a firsttimer.

My question is, how much do you normally have to work on each hair follicle for it to be permanently killed? How long after did you see regrowth in the treated area? I'm trying to figure out when I need to schedule my next app.

Ravenbajan, congratulations on the great results! Twice each year? That sounds too good to be true!!!

    Love,
    Bil.

Default Electrolysis should not cost $100 an hour!

I get it done for $45 an hour and the national average is $60 an hour -- so $100 an hour is ridiculous. Usually, a transexual electrologist will charge lower because she (formerly he) has been through it all -- and most TS people are spiritual in my limited experience.

I think it works, but there are hairs that your electrologist will have to treat more than once since they are often not in growing phase or undertreated the first time. So in the end, its long, tedious, and usually causes slight scarring/denting/wrinkling that might disappear in the long run if you are lucky.

$100 an hour is ridiculous and suggests that the electrologist you are being treated by is more concerned about his/her income than about your well being.

Find someone else in my humble opinion.

my electrolygist charges 40 dollars for 30 minutes. she's very good, and i'm happy to pay that much. if she's a liscensed and good electrolygist, then it's well worth the money. plus i have never gone for an hour - i don't have enough hair. so i never pay that much. it's been permanent for me so far. i think i've had two hairs grow back total on my chin. regrowth happens if your electrolygist uses a current that is too weak to kill the hair, or if you've previously tweezed the hair many times and distorted the hair follicle. all hairs can be permanently removed, but sometimes it may take up to three treatments on one hair if it's deeply rooted, has been tweezed many times, and is very strong and coarse.

thanks for everyones reviews so far. Perhaps electrolysis is charged in different amounts in different parts of the state or world. Either way like Sarah mentioned, as long as you feel its worth the money paid then there should be no problem. I noticed a few hairs growing in the follicles that my Electrologist treated, I know some follicles had multiple hairs in them too, so that may be why. I will go back in 2 weeks and I certainly hope I dont get scars from this because I do scar very easily. The scabs on my chin cleared up and didnt scar though so I am hoping my belly/breasts dont either.

I'm doing electrolysis now and I love it. I pay $55 for 30 minutes and I think its $85 for an hour. It really depends on where you live. I checked around for prices and that was fairly normal. I could have done it a bit cheaper but those people didn't have the experience the lady I have, nor as good of equipment. I had done electrolysis when i was a teenager for awhile and i did laser for 3 years, well i've been going now every week for about 3 months and the difference is amazing! I was going every other week for 45 minutes for awhile but going every week has made a huge difference. You really do have to get hairs when their in that active stage and if you go every week its easier to do that. I'm only sad that I'm moving cities in a couple of months and wont be able to go to my electrologist but i think by then the large bulk of the hair will be gone. Its been expensive and as a college student hard to afford but i hate the excess hair so much its been worth every penny.
