Burning scalp and hairloss

I've had this for the past 3 months or so and that is when I noticed most of my hairloss..I am wondering what this burning sensation is all about! It drives me crazy because it reminds me that I am losing hair..I cant get a derm appt til after January 6th when I go see my Endo again. I use Nioxin and Nizoral and sometimes it helps..but in general the burning comes back Does anyone else have hairloss with a burning scalp sensation?

I can't help much the only time I experince the burning sensation is after I was my hair w/ the Nioxin. GL

Can't say I have experienced a burning sensation, my hair just seems to shed as soon as I do anything with it.... I was looking up the burning sensation and found a message board on losing hair, mainly men posting from what I have read quickly, but the last post I quoted is from a female, and a few of them experience a burning sensation on their scalp and then that same spot is where the hair recedes/falls out or sheds.

My hair loss was also preceeded with a burning/stinging sensation on the scalp. Not surprisingly, the areas where the stinging occured is where my hair has began to thin and fall out at the age of 36 after previously having unbelievably dark thick hair.

I wonder if something in your life was a trigger for telogen effluvium (TE) - sudden weight loss, accutane, antidepressants, vegetarian diet (low iron), period of prolonged stress. A hair and scalp problem called the burning scalp syndrome (BSS) is sometimes associated with many hair follicles entering into the telogen stage of the hair cycle at one time.

I too am a sufferer of burning scalp syndrome. I am 28 yrs old and have suffered from bouts of severe anxiety in the past. The burning sensation tends to feel worse when I am stressed but I suffer even when I am not stressed. My hair has thinned. Its a bit of a viscious circle cause when my head burns I get stressed so it burns more! Does anyone have any personal evidence that antidepressents help with the burning senasation or any other suggestions

I haven't noticed it myself, and I've had pretty extensive loss. But I have heard this is a very common symptom, and it happens in the area you are going to lose the hair.

Yup I got that ... found out it can be down to low eostrogen .... I get it so painfully on the crown of my head .....

oh really? ya my estrogen was pretty low, so I wonder if that is why my hair had been falling out and my scalp burning..ugh either way I need to see a derm. Just one more wonderful doctor appointment to look forward to. Right now my scalp is so painful and tender to the touch, it started 2 days ago (the burning off and on for months) but there are a few spots that actually feel like I burnt myself and its tight and sore..

My Derm said it was (cant spell ok) phychosamatic !! in otherwords "in my head" ... I said its not I have this definate burning pain I would be out and for once NOT thinking about my hair loss when this severe pain would start and I would be reminded that I am balding .......

Have you seen an endocrinologist they can test for hormones

yes I just saw him 2 weeks ago. My hormones were tested before, well some of them. Testosterone was normal and my estrogen was pretty low. I am not sure what the number was for estrogen, but my testosterone was a 34 I believe. I see him again January 6th so I am going to ask him about referring me to a derm..because frankly I can deal with the excess hair and acne, but I can not deal with my hair falling out. Its been the only thing on my body I am proud of and known for..I will not let it go. It ceased for a bit, I thought it may be the saw palmetto helping..but as soon as he gave me Provera it started up again really bad falling out, I'd say I lost about 250 hairs today atleast..

Woah, woah... back up a second! S/he said it was psychosomatic?!?!?! OMG, if you weren't so far away, I'd let that doctor have a taste of my testosterone!

ScaredSally, when you say "crown" do you mean the part of your head just below the kind of 'peak' in the back or at the peak? I ask this because I have noticed just recently (over the past two months) when I put my hair up in it's bun the area where I stick the hairstick I hold it up with (just below the peak) hurts so badly it will bring tears to my eyes when that stick hits my scalp! I literally have to stop and take deep breaths to compose myself. Normally this does not hurt at all, beyond perhaps a scraping sensation if I'm in a hurry and do it too roughly. I hope you can make sense of the mess I just tried to explain!!

It's as if I have this sore spot on my head just below the very top of my head that is about the shape and diameter of a grapefruit (if it were cut flat, of course!). It's much different than my normal scalp issues and is a new occurance for me. It feels as if that stick has cut me; it burns, and it's a VERY sharp pain. I've actually reached up to check for blood to make sure I haven't cut myself! It's only in that one spot though, thank heavens.

Like Nikki, I REALLY hope this doesn't mean hairloss because I too am reknown for my hair. I've actually had, well meaning I'm sure, people tell me that they will kill me if I ever cut my hair! It is thigh length and I've put a lot of effort into it. I honestly wouldn't mind too much rocking some extensions (especially colored dreads) or having a wardrobe of wigs, but I do worry about the psychological ramifications of having to explain to hundreds of people why my hair is gone

I hear you Nikki about being known for your hair. It's a double edged sword really, as it's nice to have people admiring one of your features so much, but at the same time it brings about this feeling of... oh I don't know, responsibility? My partner calls me the "Bearer of the Hair" when people go on about it. Plus it makes you feel as if that's all you have in a way, at least it makes me feel that way. ((((((hugs)))))))

Is there any way you can call your Endo and ask him about the Provera and hairloss? Huge hormonal shifts like that almost always cause a temporary hair shed for me. Perhaps that's what's going on and they could set your mind at ease?

I found this when I looked up Provera on www.rxlist.com, under "side effects": "Skin:Acne, alopecia, and hirsutism has been reported in a few cases" You can read all this yourself by going to:

That makes me think it may be a side effect, since it appeared so suddenly when you started Provera, and may go away once you discontinue it. I'd definitely give your endo a call and talk to them about it.

(((((hugs))))) I hope it get better for you once you are off of the Provera or your body adjusts to it. If it helps any, whenever I've had hormonal shedding it eventually bounced back and wasn't permanent for me.

Dana, I also thought this time around it might be from the Provera..I think it is a combo of everything..it started early november and seemed to taper off about 3 weeks ago..then I started the Provera 2 weeks ago and it came back horribly. I think it may be winter shedding/hormones/provera..my hair is sooo thin on the top now, when I bend my head down you can see my scalp The burning has not gone away and today I was so depressed on christmas cause it wouldnt stop coming out, I was trying to be happy but this is all hurting me so deeply. ah I hope it stops soon

yep get the burning scalp too. And I am losing my hair there. I think its the DHT and tesosterone attacking the hair shaft

I have burning scalp pain too! With all the pain I get, you'd think it would show on the scalp. Nope..... just hairloss.... Hair that I desperately want to keep. Has anyone else found anything that helps relieve this? My doctor seems to think it has something to do with my liver enzymes being high, which is caused by insulin. I wish this pain would go away! The funny thing is when I get up in the morning it's gone. Then, after being up for about 20 minutes it starts back up again. Weird.
