Question Ovulating on BCP???

I had surgery last year, they did ovarian drilling and took a few cups of liquid from cysts. I was on Yasmin at the time (had been for about a year). About 7 months ago the side effects got really bad. She switched my pills twice. I was having pains for awhile which I told her about a few weeks ago. I’m now back on Yasmin, and was told to have an ultrasound done. The nurse said the results showed my right ovary was consistent w/ PCOS, and I was ovulating in the left ovary.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
I always though that you weren’t supposed to ovulate while on BCP’s? I also thought that was a reason pcos women took BCP’s, to help control the cysts? The dr office said to continue taking Yasmin and follow up in April when I have a well woman exam scheduled. I’m finally convinced this office doesn’t know about pcos and made an appointment w/ an endo, but that’s not until after my appoint w/ the gyn. Any ideas on what I can do in the meantime?

I swear I ovulate when I take BCP!! I know another cyster who DEFINITELY does. I'm sure it's got something to do with adjusting the hormone levels.

Hi,
I was told by a nurse once that some women do ovulate on bcp. The way some bcp's work is by making the cervical mucus thick so sperm can't get in to fertilize the egg. I don't know specifically how Yasmin works. I take Lo/Ovral. Are you taking met? I am on met and I'm pretty sure I do ovulate sometimes. And even though bcp's can help control cysts, they do sometimes still show up on ultrasounds. (Even on bcp's my cysts still show on the ultrasound).
Good luck, I hope you like the new dr. and can get some help for your pain.

I'm not on anything other than Yasmin. I just switched from a different brand (can't remember name, but it was a generic anyways). The only think my gyn suggested prescribing was this new med that started with an 'L' for about 6months. It's supposed to help get rid of the cysts w/o surgery, but will put you into a state of menopause. I'm only 25 and getting married in Sept, so I don't want to put my body through that right now. Maybe the Endo will know more and have better suggestions than the gyn. I'll just have to wait and pray.

Hi Startlite,
I definitely know i ovulated when i took OTC last december to bring AF, i was taking provera which was bringing non stop AF so the doc said this should be mild.
Now i started temping incidently on CD 23 and was surprised to see very high temperatures which probably means i did ovulate. Then the temps fell beautifully as i got AF again.I asked my doc the same question u did and he said that theoretically u shouldnt but if these hormones are too low in the body u can ovulate. So my guess is in PCOS women usually the progesterone levels do not rise after the first 14 days which leads to ovulation, and since BCP pills slowly increase in progesterone to induce AF at the end, the pills bring about a normal progesterone level in our bodies...
I dont know if u understood wht i meant there, sorry i made it too complicated.
Unfortunately i stopped OTC after tht one month, and waiting on Met to get AF and waiting for tht beautiful rise in temp.
Please showup AF its CD46......

Thanks gals! I'm just so confused with all this. I should have started seeing a different doctor who knew what they were talking about a long time ago. I mean, I like my gyn, but she just don't know what she's talking about with PCOS. She even told me before my surgery that I couldn't possibly have this b/c I wasn't too overweight. Then after the surgery told me to stay on bcp and the cysts would stay away. At least I finally wised up and made the other appt., just don't know how I'm going to be able to wait that long!

Great News! I have an appt. w/ the endo doc on the 14th of this month. That’s next Tuesday! My orig. appt wasn’t till almost the end of April. I had been talking to my mom about the results of the ultrasound and she’s real worried about me. I had come home Saturday to a dozen roses and a card. Well, she’s been going to this doc for some time now and had an appt. already scheduled. Bless her heart, she gave it to me! I didn’t think they would allow her to do that, but they did. It sucks that it’s on V-day, but at least things might start getting a little better!

Starlite,
I'm so glad you get to go to the doctor soon! (A doctor who knows what they're talking about that is!) It makes me so frustrated when I hear things like the other dr. told you, that you can't have PCOS because you're not too overweight. I know a couple ladies w/ PCOS who are very very thin. The symptoms affect us differently but we still suffer!
I'm also glad you're not going on the med that's supposed to put you into menopause. You're seeing this new dr. a few months before your wedding, maybe things will be getting lots better by that time!
Good luck, congrats on your appt. Let us know how it goes.

I’ve come to understand that even if a doc or whoever knows about PCOS, they may not really KNOW about it. Even the person who administered the ultrasound didn’t believe me when I said I had this because of what I look like. If she would have seen me 10 years ago, she would have believed it. I worked very hard to loose the weight then, and struggle to keep it down. (don’t always work though J). And I do hope that this doc can help b/c we’re planning on ttc once we tie the knot. I’m stressing over that more than the wedding plans themselves! I’ll keep you posted on the appt.

See that cute guy in my siggy?

.....

That's because I ovulated while on Yasmin.

one of the OBs I saw during my PG said that he would see at least one PCOSer a year who got pregnant while on the combo of Yasmin/Metformin.

Snowbunny- That pic is so darling! Were you on met at the time of conception? Also, were you ttc or did it just happen? Not that it would be horrible if I'd get pg, but I would like to get married first, and I know my mom would want that too . But it does make me feel a little better about when we ttc that it can happen.

When I ovulate I have sharp twinges on one side in the ovary area. I don't know if it's just me but I feel hot on O-day too, almost a little feverish.
Hope this helps
