It's not so much about staying away from a particular food. I mean, vegetarians will say that you need to stay away from meat. Low carbers say you should stay away from carbs. Calorie counters say it's about calories...

A good rule of thumb is to focus on eating more whole grains, legumes, quality protiens (whether that's meat, meat substitutes, eggs, cheese...), and lots of fruits and veggies. If you can skip the refined starches like white flour and sugar altogether, more power to you. Otherwise, treat them as occasional foods. Something to have once in a while.

I think it is more about balance and moderation than anything. My gyno told me to eat whole grains rather than processed grains, so white rice is something I'll have as an occasional treat. I choose not to eat meat because I didn't like it very much to begin with and I can get protein from other foods that are lower in fat and cholesterol. But there are lots of meats like fish, chicken, and leaner red meat that are excellent sources of protein, and you can also cook them in ways that remove some of the fat. I don't cut out sweets entirely because then I would just sit there craving them--I just eat a little piece of chocolate or a sugar free fudgesicle instead of a big candy bar. I also drink lots of water. It's very good for your body and it makes you feel fuller too.
