Default Diet question for thin cysters!

I just had my ultrasound this morning, which confirmed my PCOS. I am fairly normal weight (5' 6', 145 lbs) though I could definitely stand to lose 10 lbs or so. My LH/FSH ratio is 3:1, my testosterone was slightly high, and I've just started battling with a little excess hair on my upper lip. Oh, and the acne. Oh, and the hypothyroidism.

So my question is, is the IR Diet applicable to those who have PCOS and are not overweight? What else should/ can I be doing?

I'm waiting for my endo to call me back, but I'm hoping he'll start me on Met.

I'm not overweight (5'1" & 112) and the IR diet has worked wonders for me. I'm not real strict with it - mostly watch my protein-carb ratio and try to steer clear of simple carbs like sugar - but it definitely helped reduce my symptoms and regulate my cycle. Within a month I had a noticeable difference and within 6 months I was like a new person!

I'd say give it a try for a month or two and see if you notice any difference.

Was there a good book you read to learn about the best diet? It seems like there are so many books out there, I'm not sure which one to get.

I wish I had a recommendation. I didn't do much book-research, I got tips from my Dr and looked around online.

Like I said earlier, I'm not real strict with the diet. I made a point to eat regularly throughout the day and found ways to add protein to my diet and reduce my carb intake by making substitutions (like snacking on dry roasted nuts or yogurt instead of chips or pretzels, and replacing some fruits & starches with beans and veggies).

I've seen a few books recommended on other threads that sound like they're worth checking out. (The PCOS Diet seems to be a favorite.)

Hmm, PCOS and Your Fertility sounds interesting. I might have to check that out!

But to answer your question - yes it's definitely helped. I used to get uncontrollable hunger, nausea, mood swings, dizziness, etc. Now all that's gone and my period is finally regular. I have periods w/o BCP with a 28-32 day cycle range and I now O every cycle.

I should point out that I don't cut out carbs completely. I still eat pasta and bread and even sweets. But I have to limit how much I have and if I start eating too much, I balance them by eating more protein. (It might sound weird, but I can actually feel a surge in my blood stream now if I get too much sugar in my system.) It was a little hard to start with, but once I found little things I could substitute and got into the habit it became a lot easier.

    Good Luck!

The only way I can do pasta is to balance out the extra carbs with protein - I throw a bunch of shredded cheese on top and skip the garlic bread!

    Good Luck with the RE!!

I'm the same weight but 1" taller. I use an chinese herbal green tea. The brand is Triple Leaf www.tripleleaf-tea.com. They have a "dieters" and "super slimming", they seem the same to me but the super may be a bit stronger. It is a cleansing tea so it helps with bloating and keeping regular ; ) It's pretty strong though so start with 1/4 cup and work up to 1 cup a day. It's a great way to feel leaner. I can lose 10lbs or so and then stay on it to maintain. I hope this helps!

    Cheers
