    Default Hey. :)

Hey everyone. I was diagnosed with PCOS in January and I'm still waiting for my hospital appointment with a Gynecologist to come through. Since then excess hair growth on my stomach, thighs and back has gotten a whole lot worse. Also every time I wash my hair I lose a lot of it, so it's become very thin, plus I have bad skin. All of these things are making me really self conscious, sometimes I don't even wanna go outside I feel so ashamed. I'm 17, almost 18 and I'm terrified of what's to come. Does anyone have any advice for me until I get my hospital appointment? I'd really appreciate it. I'm so glad to have found this place.

    Thanks.

i am so sorry to hear about what you are going through. Hopefully your doctor can help you to feel better. I am on Flutamide which helps with hair loss, oily skin, and hair in the "manly places". Flutamide is an androgen blocker, and it's very strong. BUT.. I know spirolactone has the same effect, but i also heard it doesnt work AS WELL as flutamide. i found waxing and plucking helps w/ teh hair, it doesnt grow back as fast. good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Welcome to Soul Cysters! Just be glad that you can find some answers at this age instead of a few years down the road. If I were you I would get into an endocrinologist as soon as possible. You might even tell them your symptoms when you call to see if you can get an emergency appointment. Also start cutting out any refined sugars, such as pastries, white bread, white rice, etc... Also make sure you are getting plenty of vitamins, rest, and nutritious foods. There are tons of things you can do to help yourself right now, before even going to the doctor. Check out the alternative remedies forum, also the diet and exercize forum. I'm not sure if you have weight problems, but either way you can learn a lot about how to eat to help your PCOS problems. I know that all the information and changes that need to be made can be overwhelming, but it will get better, I promise. Welcome again,

Welcome to the board!! That's good that you have been diagnosed early. The sooner it is under control, the better for you. There are a lot of women here to support you. You'll be fine!

I always recommend trying a low carb diet. It helps most women with PCOS a lot. There are a wide variety to choose from like Atkins, South Beach, Sugar Busters, and the IR Diet. Check out the diet boards to see what other people are doing. I credit my diet to being able to have my baby. Metformin is the other thing I recommend. It's pretty standard issue in the treatment of PCOS, but since it's prescription you will have to talk to your doctor about that.
