I could not find anything about 'over-production' of estrogen which seems to have been, and still is, my problem with a cyst growing every month instead of being sloughed off in my normal menses.

Has anyone ever been told this? and what can I do to avoid this? The doctors are vague . . .

I have searched the message boards but was unable to find anything relevant. Anyone know if PCOS can mask Cushing's? Or anyone misdx's PCOS when it was Cushing's? I am beginning to wonder if I really have PCOS, since none of the PCOS treatments are having any effect on me.......

Metformin did wonders for me... but while I do have cysts... my bloodwork was really wierd... everything was LOW.. when i thought it was meant to be higher than normal... my LH and FSH were 3 and 1 respectively... and my testosterone was only about 2... most of which was free... my gyno said this indicated PCOS but wasn't the sterotypical sort of numbers... I figure since the meds work maybe he was right and I just have a wierd form of it... but is their anything else that can cause similar problems? My main symptom was always intense pain and irregular periods... and apparently pain isn't associated with PCOS... they thought i had Emdemetriosis... but never got round to doing the tests... my mother didn't like the idea of having me put under general anaethetic. But... Emdo isn't treated with Met? so if I have it.. why is the Met making the pain go away? Eugh.. confuuuused

Inheritance and PCOS
I have found at least three cases of PCOS in my father's family including myself. There are another two to whom I have not spoken yet. These women are all small in size with infertility despite any treatment and two failed marriages.

What is the likelihood of this frequency in a family? I would be interested in any comments.

Many women with Cushing's are initially misdiagnosed with PCOS. This website is extremely helpful for anyone wondering if they might have Cushing's instead of PCOS: www.cushings-help.com. There is a message board on that website that is really great, also.

In my opinion, I think every woman that may possibly be diagnosed with PCOS should also be screened for Cushing's, since many of the symptoms are similar. You can also be diagnosed with both conditions. Whenever you get your initial labs done, you should ask for a cortisol test if your doctor doesn't automatically order it. Of course, you need to be aware of the time of day that the test should be performed. Cortisol tests should be performed as early in the day as possible.

Jallyson, you are like me. I was diagnosed with PCOS last year, with an LH:FSH ration of 3.85, but my cortisol was never tested and I was never informed by my doctor that there was an extremely serious condition out there that had a lot of the same symptoms as PCOS. Fast-forward a year and a half. I have been on birth control and Glucophage, but the only symptoms that improved were my periods and my acne. Everything else (fatigue, insomnia, weight-gain, odd stretch-marks, etc.) was still the same. I have tried Weight Watchers, medical weight-loss programs, low-carb diets, plain healthy food and exercise. Nothing helped.

Finally, I researched what my symptoms may have been an indicator of, and came up with Cushing's. I had my doctor do a cortisol test, which came back high, so now I am doing other tests for Cushing's. I don't deny that I have PCOS, because I do, at least according to my LH:FSH ratio. But I may also have Cushing's, and it really burns me that my previous doctors never even mentioned the possibility to me. They simply saw the LH:FSH ratio and decided that PCOS was the only thing wrong with me.

Ok, I was initially going for sinus surgery, when they did the pre-op screen they found I was hyperthyroid (though presented all opposite symptoms, weight gain, tired etc), through the tests to figure out what was wrong with my thyroid they discovered PCOS, now I have started to treat the hyperactive thyroid and am gaining weight rapidly which led me to suspect that maybe I have cushings but the Hyperthyroid kept the weight from going up (while something seemed to stop me from the weight loss associated with hyperthyroid).
I also have vitiligo which is also an endocrine disorder.
I am becoming VERY interested in seeing what other medical issues women with PCOS are being diagnosed with, I would believe that there is a root (and often undiagnosed) connection with these issues, have any of you also had Thyroid troubles with your PCOS?

Interesting, I just read the site about cushing's and I remembered something, a while ago I went for a facial and at the end the women asked if I would like her to wax my chin and neck, I hesitated and she told me I had to because it looked so awful I couldn't go out like that, I relented. When she was done it felt like she ripped half of my skin off with the hair, there were bloody patches and it looked way worse then it ever could have before.
The 'thinning skin' characteristic sticks out for me, and no, I never have, nor ever will, go back to that place.

You're right to think that all those things are related and that one can mask another.

I'm researching endocrine disorders for a different reason but I'm found that it's a very complex system and that it's unlikely you'll ever find one doctor with all the answers.

My test results came back odd as well and though the PCOS treatment is helping I don't think it's the whole answer.

It's frustrating searching for information but google is a great resource. Just make sure that what you choose to believe it from a reliable source.

Hi~ I was diagnosed with PCOS in August, but my numbers aren't really indicative of PCOS. I think the Gynecologist wanted to shut me up and suggested met for the IR. I do however have Cushing's. I think my problems are Cushing's and not PCOS. I just learned about the Cushing's a couple of months ago, and until I fly to a specialist in Jan., I won't know if it's PCOS and Cushing's or just Cushing's. I hope this helps someone!

Nice to see another Minnesotan here... I used to live in Delano just west of the Cities on Highway 12. I do miss the Mall of America (and the 'Dales), 'CCO in the mornings, and the winters, but I love England too much to go back.

If what you have is only Cushings, and it's definitely caused by a tumor, then they should be able to fix you. Having a tumor is not a nice thing but pituitary tumors are usually very treatable and I wish you the best of luck with that.

I have odd hormone levels too. I had an MRI in August looking for the prolactinoma that my Endocrinologist was convinced I had. Four months on a waiting list for the test and another month for the results and they didn't find anything. Which means it's either there, and still too small to show on an MRI, or there's some other problem that they haven't even started to look for yet. I was hoping for an answer but all I got was another mystery.

I was put on Met and Spiro because my symptoms indicate PCOS, and in all fairness, it has helped but I don't think it's the whole answer. Nothing seems to happen quickly or easily under the British NHS. I have had to take a very strong lead in my treatment and that's a little scary sometimes because it makes me feel like I know more than the doctors and that's not a good thing. I have another round of tests at the end of January.

I have read at this website that yes Cushing's is often times diagnosed as PCOS. My mom who had a hystarectamy due to PCOS about 30 years ago when that is what they did for just about every female problem. They didn't find out that it was PCOS untill after the surgery and they were able to look at everything. The doctors are now testing her for Cushing's syndrome.
