Thread: dealing with doctors

    Question dealing with doctors

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on dealing with doctors. I went through 3 doctors before one finally diagnosis me with what was wrong(PCOS). I am seeing the doctor(ob/gyn) that diagnosed me but he is not the most helpful doctor. When I ask him any questions he treats me like I am wasting his time. I would hate to switch doctors since this is the first one that actually did any labs/tests when I told him my symptoms. Even my family doctor shrugged his shoulders when I told him that my ob/gyn diagnosed me with PCOS. I not a very outspoken person, so maybe someone could give me some advice on how to deal with doctors like this.

I don't really know how to help on this one, I too am very shy and it took me ages (and a lot of headaches)to get a good dr. that would dx me and listen to my concerns. The only thing I can think of is to get a new dr. and hope that he treats you better. :S sorry I am not much help. I know that searching for a good dr. is a pain. Good luck.

Get a new doc. It's not asking too much for a doc to give you the tests you require and treat you with civility.

I'm not sure you need a new doctor -- if your OB/GYN is good for that thing, keep him/her. Many OB/GYNs don't treat PCOS (mine didn't) but he referred me to an endocrinologist. (Unfortunately, he didn't tell me I needed a speciality in PCOS but that's another story.)

My current Endo that is treating me for PCOS told me to always check for membership at the link below -- I know some folks are treated by their G.P. or OB/GYN, but I found that my Endo, understood more about how the PCOS affected the overall body and he could run numerous other tests (thyroid, pituatary, etc.) that could also be an issue. On thing, though -- you need to be proactive about your care. There are too many medical folks that are just willing to pass you along. You have a medical condition that needs appropriate care. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the help. I have been thinking about going to an endocrinologist, but I am not sure. It helps to know that one is helping you. We do not seem to have a lot of endo. drs. around here that are on my insurance plan.

Welcome to Soulcysters! Sorry that your doc treats you like that. You deserve not only his expertise on PCOS but also his time and respect. He should be treating you with kindness. (Sorry I had a mean doc growing up so I feel very strongly about all that!)

I would probably want to at least try another doc, see if someone else will give you the care you need AND the compassion you deserve.

    Just my thoughts..

There is a forum here to help you find a good doc in your area, maybe that would help?

    Glad you're here cyster
