Thread: High insulin level?

  1. #1

    Question High insulin level?

I had a glucose test done and the results showed i had high insulin level before hand and then went up higher after i drank the glucose. Could someone shed some light n explain to me the high insulin level thing, can it go down? is it the start of diabetes?...Like im pretty sure it may be the start of diabetes..But right now the hormone specialist is trying to figure out if the high insulin level is from my pcos or some blockage thing?

I dont even have bad pcos, its just really mild and im not overweight or anything so this is weird news...

Mine was 48.3 as a fasting insulin level. The fasting glucose challenge, well I failed that too. I never did get numbers. I started out with a diagnosis of insulin resistant until they did that glucose challenge. Then I moved to diabetic type two.

    Good luck with your tests.

My insulin level is 4 times that of a "normal" person. I'm not certain who determines "normalcy" but nonetheless that is what my dr said. I am now known as insulin resistant. My dr. said that I am guaranteed to get diabetes if/when I get pregnant. Also, according to my dr, if a person gets diabetes during pregnancy it is a great prediction that they will get it later in life. I'm not certain if my dr. was blowing smoke but that is all I have to go by.

boy dweiler I can sure identify with you. I'm in the same position. I'm not even overweight and my insulin level is so high. I'm doing everything I can to bring it down (resistance training, metformin, chromium, really low carb diet).

The idea of gestational diabetes similarly scares me. (I don't know if your doctor is completely correct but yes I've also heard the 50% of women with GD go on to develop type 2.) This and my own insulin levels scared the heck out of me. I probably could get pregnant but ever since finding out this I've begun to rethink it. I could talk about my one time dream of having five children but *brave smile* I tihink that might be really depressing. Suffice to say, yeah it is a really horrible choice to have to make.

I'm overweight but I have been aggressively trying to get in shape. I have lost 31 lbs so far... I'm hoping for a lot more to drop off. I haven't really dieted I just take my met, go to the gym frequently & go to work. My job is physically demanding. I am on my feet then entire 8 hrs & I lift, push, pull things that are over a few hundred pounds. The nice thing is I can still drink my dr. pepper each day & not have to worry about it. Ever since I quit smoking a couple years ago, I have become addicted to dr. pepper. OF course, I have cut down my daily intake by over 1/2 but still like my daily dr. pepper.

Congrats on your weight loss!! You must be so thrilled. I never thought I could get so excited about fitting in a pair of pants 1 size smaller.

The idea of gestational diabetes did(still does) scare me, however, what scared me the most was giving myself a daily shot. Since I've been on the injectables I have become pretty good at giving shots. Not that getting a shot is the worst thing about getting diabetes but at least I know if I do get the "inevitable" I will be ready. I sure hope my doc was wrong & it is NOT inevitable that I get it. Only time will tell.

tell me about it. I first switched from regular to diet coke (when I figured out how much sugar was in regular, in comparison to say oreos or a chocolate bar...stuff I figured I could enjoy a lot more for a fraction of the *price*) Though now, I'm trying to switch to club soda, because I heard all thse horror stories about aspartame so I'm convinced it's fying some part of me. It's so hard to give up though isn't it ?

My Dr wants to see me in another 6 months to see if i'll lose more weight and maybe the insulin level will come down...I've lost about 16 kilos in the last 6 months so im pretty sure i could lose abit more in another 6 months. She's told me to see a dietician for now to tell me what type of foods are high in insulin and then repeat the same blood tests in another 6 months n see how it is then. Hopefully it'll be fine by then.

Everyone always says that Diet Dr. Pepper tastes just like the real Dr. Pepper. I must have a very sensitive palate because I can definitely taste the difference. I used to be out of control w/ Dr. P, I used to drink almost a 12 pack a day. I have since cut back to 1-3 but I work them off by my physically demanding job & by going to the gym a few times a week. When most people quit smoking they turn to food, I turned to Dr. Pepper.

My husband one time switch to Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper & it really messed w/ him. I don't know how to explain it but some people cannot handle Aspartame. I do cook w/ splenda all the time. A pumpkin pie made w/ Splenda ( I think) tastes better than one w/ out. Although I heard that there has been some controversy over Splenda, I still use it all the time.

My insulin was 16 and the doctor said it should be around 5. But I was told that I'm diabetic because my glucose levels are consistantly higher than they should be, or at the very highest end of normal.

After my glucose tolerance test mine was 300 and it should be between 5-55 my Endo said, she diagnosed me with severe insuline resistance and not diabetes, which I found odd since my blood sugar ( before the met ) was always high, sometimes in the 200's ...
She did not mention anything about PCOS, just Insulin Resistance.

    Thumbs up Gestational Diabetes

    Hi
I had gestational diabetes during 2 / 3 of my pregnancies. My first pregnancy was 'normal' lol; with my 2nd, I was full-blown g-diabetic and had to give myself a needle 2 times a day. With the 3rd, I had g-d mildly and was only on a diabetic diet.
I HATE needles! I can't even LOOK at them lol. When I had to give myself the needles, I would yell at myself that the baby NEEDED me to do it! My husband and son #1 could hear me through the whole apartment. It was Never easy, but I did it, and now I realize it could have been much worse. The epi-pen needles make it a lot easier than you would expect.
Your doctor is probably right that you will have g/d during your pregnancies, but it will be gone immediately after birth and it is possible to avoid problems later in life. I just wish I had had someone make me realize how important it was to lose weight and watch my diet to avoid getting diabetes when I was over 40.
They won't look for diabetes during pregnancy until the 4th month, and then they will give you a fasting glucose intolerance test - the same one you mentioned. If you are already watching your diet and exercising to lose weight, you won't have to change very much, and there is a chance that you won't have to do needles. The important thing is to change things like the foods you eat and keep up the exercising. The best thing about it is that at the end of it all, you end up with your new baby, and the needles are a thing of the past.
BTW, I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but the son that I had g/d with that needles were necessary has been found as gifted and has a reasonably high IQ, where my other 2 sons, while gifted, don't really come close to his. His health is better too; he practically never gets sick - even when the rest of the house is down with colds/flu's.
So don't get put off pregnancy because of the chance of g/d. The end result justifies anything that you have to go through during the pregnancy. There is nothing close to the feeling of holding your new baby in your arms after the birth. Absolutely nothing!
I have found a 20 min. walk after a meal can drop my sugars really well. I can be a 12.2 before dinner, and drop to 7.2 at the 2hr mark, with a dinner that another time, with no walk, had the sugars go up, not down. Exercise works best on our sugars when it's within 2 hours after a meal.

If you have any questions feel free to ask!

I am in a similar situation. I was diagnosed with PCOS and insulin resistance my fasting insulin was 18) in July. I started on metformin immediately and went up to 2500 mg. I have bloodwork done monthly and I have not repsonded to the met. So my dr. had me do a 3 hour glucose test. My numbers came back high on insulin by normal blood sugars. So he has assured me that I am not currently diabetic, but has said most likely I will become.

I am not overweight (5'10", 150 pounds) and diabetes doesn't run in my family. I am going to start watching what I eat to try and control it, but I don't know where to go from here. My dr. did suggest another drug called "Actos" which could help but no guarantees especially since I didn't respond to metformin.

I found all this out after seeing a fertility dr.--now I am concerned about 2 things, fertility and my overall general health.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?
