Default Muscle cramps on Yaz or Yasmine

I was curious if anyone had trouble with muscle cramping on Yaz or Yasmine. I've had the problem before, once every month or so I'd wake up in the middle of the night, kind of like charley horses from when we were kids.

Since I started on Yaz and subsequently Yasmin, they are far worse. I get mild cramping on occassion, during the day, I also get serious cramps, waking up the middle of the night with them down both legs.

I forgot to mention that I also starting taking prometrium on the 3rd month of taking BCP's due to not getting my period, regardless of the meds.

Anyone having this problem as it gets old... fast.

    Thanks
    Eileen

I have this problem too. I am taking Yaz, 50 mg Spiro, plus a blood pressure med with a slight diuretic. Every few weeks I have to lay off the Spiro for a day or two to get the leg & foot cramps to stop. I drink tons of water. I've tried taking magnesium which I've heard should help the leg cramps, but so far no luck.

I take Yasmin and Spiro and I occassionally get muscle cramps in my leg, but it isn't excessive. However, I would like to share with you what my doctor told me when I started taking both these medicines. She told me that if I have muscle cramping I need to make sure that I am drinking plenty of water. I know the previous poster said this didn't work for her, but I would give it a try. I have also heard that potassium can help with muscle cramps. Since Yasmin as 25 mg of spiro in it, which is a potassium sparing diaretic, I wouldn't overdo it with the potassium, but make sure you are getting enough potassium in your diet. If you are also taking spiro you definately don't want to eat a diet high in potassium, but some potassium is still good for you.

My doctor told me this is normal and caused by increased potassium levels. Yasmin/Yaz increases potassium in the body.

Even though this is normal, I don't think you should have to suffer. Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions for you. I would talk to your doctor to see what can be done, especially if they are interfering with your sleep by waking you up in the middle of the night.

    Good luck!

Been taking Yasmin on and off for three years. I used to get such bad cramps in my legs that it would wake me out of my sleep screaming. I don't get such bad ones anymore, but now I'm just generally cramped all over my body. Also, it's funny, because I actually have decreased potassium levels and my magnesium's normal (my mom, however, had severe magnesium deficiency and still has to go for IVs). Ah, I just figure it's tough luck, but you're definitely not alone as far as muscle crampage on Yaz/Yasmin goes.

Thanks everyone. I'm going for another ultrasound on Tuesday as I'm on the pill since January and I still haven't gotten my period. When I've got the results from that, I'll ask about the muscle cramps. They're driving me nuts, but it's good to know that it's not that unusual.

    Thanks
    Eileen
