I got the script today. She said every week to up the pill by 500g. Im starting tomorrow, taking half a tablet once a day with a meal. I asked her about the Met XR or slow release and she said it doesnt "work" as well as normal Met.

I believe your doctor is a bit crazy. Met ER is wonderful and doesn't cause the s/e that a lot of people on reg Met experience. I don't see any reason not to rx that over reg Met-- but then again, I don't have the medical degree. :/

My doctor reccomended I give the normal Met a go first. But that was primarily because of the cost, but maybe there are other reasons for it?

She said in her opinion the slow release doesnt work that well and i should give the normal one a go and see how it is. Ive started off at half a tablet once a day, ie 250g.
I do ok on the regular met. I will have occaisional flare ups (tummy probs) when I eat something I shouldn't or if I get a different manufacturer, but it would be nice to not have any side effects!
I hope the regular met treats you good.
I have to take the regular stuff because our pharmacy doesn't carry the XR. I don't want to take a script off base, because then I'd have to pay for it. LoL.
My endo took me off of Met XR. My gyn had prescribed XR because I asked her to for the convenience of only taking meds once a day. The endo said there are studies that show it doesn't work as well for PCOS as regular Met.
I think that is so weird that some doctors said the reg Met is better than the extended release because I've read various different sites which said the complete opposite---that Met ER is actually better absorbed that reg Met. And it can't be a cost issue because Metformin is generic.
When my gyn was writing my script for Metformin (Glucophage) I specified that I wanted the ER because I had heard good things about it and she told me that was fine (and then thanked me for doing my homework).![]()

RE #1 who *couldn't* get me pregnant refused to give me the extended release version (but she was an idiot in so many other ways that I can't specifically fault her for it)
RE #2 who *DID* get me pregnant was enthusiastic about the extended release version, and prescribed it for me on my very first visit with him.
My high risk OB told me to *STAY* on the extended release version.
And, as an aside, the RE who did my uterine surgery (and referred me to RE #2) and confirmed that I wasn't crazy for thinking I had PCOS, told me that (1) the non-extended release version was what was studied specifically with respect to PCOS; (2) because the extended release version wasn't separately studied that TECHNICALLY they couldn't say it had the same effects for PCOS; but (3) in all other instances, the extended release version works EXACTLY THE SAME as the regular version, but it gets metabolized a little over time, rather than all at once.
My compliance with the extended release version has been much better - it doesn't make me sick like the regular stuff, and I can take my entire dose all at once rather than take it several times during the day. I would NEVER go back to the regular version - even if I had to pay extra for it.
