Hi. ANyone know what is safe to take for depression if you are hoping to become pregnant? I'm off to the doctor on Monday and would like to sound like I know what I'm talking about! TIA
Some are safer than others. Paxil, for example, is a no-no.They can't really do studies on pregnant women, so it's considered fairly safe if the drug has been aroudn a while and there haven't been any birth defects associated with it's use. Your doctor may want you to stop or taper off once you become pregnant depending on the severity of your depression and how conservative they are about meds during pregnancy.
Personally, I wouldn't stop taking something if you are ttc. Ttc is only more stressful than regular life. I stopped and after a while decided I really needed to be on them to deal with the situation. I did change from Paxil to Lexapro when it was changed to a Categor X drug. My OB wanted me to taper down from 20mg to 10mg and then off. I wasn't planning to do that, but I actually felt better than ever during pregnancy and didn't need any anti-depressant. I started back once DD was born.

My doctor had me change from Paxil 20mg to Lexapro 10mg when I began ttc. Paxil is known to cause some withdraw symptoms in women and babies. Lexapro is very easy to go on and off of, so when I do get pg, I will try to do without it. My doctor said it depends on the person and the situation. In general he advises to try without antidepressants during pg, but that if you are seriously depressed, that is not good either and the benefits of being on a med outweigh the negatives. I am lucky I have a very wonderful family doctor. Talk to yours and see what he says. You can always try a psychiatrist since they know the most about these drugs.
Thanks for you help, girls. I went to the doctor yesterday, and she was wonderful. The first doctor I didn't have to fight with to cenvince them I have PCOS and need to be treated for it. SHe put me on 10 mg Lexapro as well, and I feel pretty good about that because of your stories. If I'm ever lucky enough to get pg again, I don't plan on being on any meds, I was just worried about not knowing that I am and what could happen. You have made me feel much better!
I have been on Lexapro and Wellbutrin (not together) while pregnant. I think they are two of the safer drugs out there.
I guess it's not great but if you see your doctor and terminate treatment as soon as you become pregnant you should be ok.
Most medicines are bad for pregnancy. Sometimes when you read about what you should not do when you want to become pregnant you wonder if it's anything that you can do.
I was on Zoloft for my depression for most of my pg with ds, even having to use Ativan for anxiety in the last three months. My ds is perfectly fine as he was when he was born. I know we need to take care of our babies but we also need to take care of ourselves and get information from people who are well informed - doctors or people who have had first-hand experience. I'm currently seeing a psychiatric pregnancy expert who is perfectly fine with me being on Prozac my entire next pregnancy. Depression and anxiety on top of morning sickness are awful.

Prozac is considered one of the safest anti-depressants during pregnancy. I'm sure it's partly because it's been around so long. If it was causing problems people would have noticed by now.
