Default UK Cysters - Out of interest, who diagnosed you?

For me it was a not fully qualified GP... I'm eternally grateful to her for picking it up so quickly as about 4 doctors had previously missed it. Quite how they missed it I'm not sure cos is blatently obvious!

    What about you?

Well, I wrote an extensive letter to my GP with my symptoms, I only wrote to her because I was worried I was going bald.. losing ridiculous amounts of hair.. I'd already done some research online and whittled it down to a few things that I thought I could have.. which were hypothyroidism (As it's in my family) and PCOS..

I had a nurse come out and take blood for testing and then my GP called me to tell me that my blood tests confirmed that I had PCOS. She was like "Good news is, you don't have hypothyroidism, diabetes or anemia (Which she tested me for too, convinced it was one of those) but it seems you do have polycystic ovary syndrome.. and in your situation, I know you're not able to have a scan right now, but if it's alright with you I'd like to start you on a course of medication which should help your symptoms."

So, I agreed.. and was put on Metformin 500mg and Dianette. Been a month and a bit now since DX.

I was diagnosed by my gp, a couple of years ago. My gp is female and when i explained to her about some of my symptoms, she was shocked that i had been complaining since i was 19!!! I always saw men drs. I don't really trust male gp's anymore.

Took me 8 years to get pregnant (although I had a couple of miscarriages), but because I don;t like hospitals, drs, etc I never actually went to my GP for help.

Then I got pregnant after 8 years, but still no doctor. I had the worst miscarriage ever around 10-12 weeks after being on teaching practice and catching chicken pox off one of the germy kids. Luckily it was the last day of my TP, so the kid - who was really fond of me - never found out, or she'd be feeling guilty to this day, I imagine. Anyway, catastrophic miscarriage like something out of a horror film. Still I didn't go to the doctor. Told DH to only bother if I got a high fever or passed out, in the days that followed and as I didn't - no infection, so stayed away from doctor's. Anyway, 10 more weeks passed and I realised I was still pregnant. At which point I finally DID go to hospital and they told me I'd miscarried my baby's non identical twin.

Then the whole story came out and the maternity hospital persuaded me to go for investigations after baby was safely born. So when he was born, they sent me to the local Women's Hospital and the consultant there did all the bloods, scans etc and said it was PCOS pretty quickly. She seemed very upbeat and said at least it's something we can work with. One round of Clomid and son no 2!

Concieved 3 more babies and couple more miscarried babies, with no more medical intervention. The pregnancies seriously messed with my weight though - went from size 6-8 to size 22. So since then have used diet and exercise and herbs to self medicate, which has worked really well.

A private Gynocologist who specialises in Endochornology (though endometriosis was his speciality). I was sent to him finally after gp after gp sent me away with painkillers telling me my pain was "normal" and I was just some sort of pathetic wimp for not being able to cope with af.. bah.
I explained all my symptoms which sounded more like Endo than PCOS and got all the tests done first through the nhs (which messed upand didn't do the right tests) and then privately through the bupa clinic which cost a bit. It was worth it though, after waiting years I had an answer withing 24 hours of getting blood taken! My fsh and LH were so low I wasn't ovulating, they were reversed which is characteristic of Pcos and my overies had cysts. He wanted to do an exploritory to rule out a double whammy of endo and pcos but we never got round to that. I started met and within weeks I was feeling normal. it was like some sort of miracle had occured. No more pain, regular cycles, an answer.
I'll never forget the look on my gynos face when I told him I was pregnant, hahaha.. he was SO HAPPY.

I was dxed by my GP when I complained of the time between periods getting longer and longer, it was a 6 months between them when I had my first appointment with her.

She sent me for blood tests which confirmed it after my first appointment 12 months ago. I haven't been referred to an endo yet, since I'm not ttc and all I want to do is get the symptoms under control at the moment. The Yasmin and Vaniqa that she prescribed seem to be doing just that (but slowly!), and my GP is great anyway, she isn't one of those "losing weight will solve all your problems" doctors. She said to just let her know if/when I would like to be referred, or when we decide to ttc, so I'm happy with the way it is at the moment

I was watching what's it called 'diet doctors' on channel five around January last year and they were talking about hair on the stomach and how it can relate to PCOS (I'd never heard of pcos at this time) and I was like OMG I HAVE A HAIRY BELLY !!! but then my mum tried to convince me it's because I'm iranian but she failed, so I went to my GP and got referred to a gyno who specializes in pcos and got diagnosed iiiiiiin march!
