Thread: Fish oil or EPO

    Exclamation Fish oil or EPO

My periods are all messed up and vitex didn't help at all. So I was thinking about trying fish oil or Evening Primrose oil. I'm leaning more towards the fish oil because I heard you can only take EPO at certain times, and fish oil you can actually take throughout your whole cycle.

So my question is which would you reccomend?
did fish oil help anyone regulate your periods?

    Really???

    When did this happen?
I'm planning on starting EPO sometime very soon!

I didn't know that there are only certain times you can take it, whats that about?

Some women who are TTC stop taking it after ovulation. I took it for two cycles before I got pregnant unexpectedly. I took it consistently throughout the entire cycles without any problems.

Fish Oil and the reason I say this is because it is the omega 3 that both these oils contain that you need.

EPO has a fraction of the amount compared to Fish Oil.. Youd need way more EPO than Fish Oil not to mention the price difference? Campared to Fish Oil, EPO is very expensive..

Hey you may be able to look into Natural Progesterone Cream also for regulating periods, Im jealous of all those that are using it as Im hard pressed to find a GP that will prescribe it here in New Zealand.. arrrrgh

I would go with the fish oil. Like Funkydiva said, it's difficult for EPO - which has the omega GLA in it and must convert that to EPA/DHA. The same goes for flaxseed, which contains ALA, which again has to convert to EPA/DHA (15% converts to EPA & possibly not to DHA at all).

    Fish oil already has EPA/DHA.

Evening primrose 'may' cause uterine contractions which if you're trying to conceive wouldn't be good to take in the 2nd half of cycle.

There are also plant supplement forms of DHA/EPA. I'm taking one now that has just DHA because I can't tolerate fish oil. But they do make a brand (V-pure) that has EPA & DHA. They are produced from algae (which is where fish get their omegas). They are a bit expensive though. I'm waiting in the hope another brand comes out or the price goes down.

So definately, if you can tolerate fish oil - it's best. Take a Vit. E supplement with it though, as fish oil capsules can be pro-oxidents (which is why it is sometimes questionable in pgy). It most likely won't normalize your cycles, but it is essential to take. Progesterone cream however will likely help you much more.

Fish oil is so great for so many things, so I'd take that, and if you have trouble with the fishiness of it I'd look into flax, which I've heard is also helpful (Kat posted an article about it, I believe). I've been taking EPO from CD1 to ovulation to help with cervical fluid, but I don't think it's been helping. The bottle is almost out and I probably won't bother replacing it.

    Best of luck!

I was looking for information on GLA, but seems like you ladies recommend Fish Oil more.

    few questions:
    1. do the fish oil tables make you have 'fish breath'?
    2. what dosage would you recommend?

checking online - the EPO softgels are available in 1000mg doses and fish oil is available in 1200mg doses at the pharmacy.

I take the fish oil that has the coating on it that prevents the fishy after taste.

I use the double strength fish oil from Target. It says "no fish burps" on the label, and I haven't had any problem.
