I am now a transplant in St Lucia. I have created a social group Caribbean Cysters. Please feel free to join.

I have learned to love WI food. I do not eat fig, plaintain. I will eat ripe banana or ripe plaintain once in a blue moon. I cut out bread, flour products. However, I do eat rice. I eat rice, sweet potatos, dasheen. I only drink water and sometimes herbal tea. I have cut out soft drinks, caffeine, and fresh juice. I have added more veggies and fresh fruit.
It has been hard in my house since DH loves WI food. But we have compromised, he will stew meat, but removes the skin/fat when making chicken or pork. We have increased our fish intake to at least 1 per week.

As far as finding an understanding dr... I found one here who knew a lot about PCOS, but only time she would speak to you was when you were in her office paying her. In fact, I called her for 2 weeks before my tube started to rupture and she never returned my call. My new dr doesn't know so much about PCOS but has a great bedside manner. I have decided I would rather bedside manner than knowledge. The 1st dr knowledge gets me no where if she doesn't help me.

Did you live in St Lucia at all? Do you ever visit? We just ended carnival yesterday so wondered if you come back at all, like many others.

    @SandV,
Thanks! I lived there until I was 6 years old, I do visit every once in a while. My last visit was in January 06. My brother and sister are there now celebrating carnival.

Has anyone been able to find any success on a diet of "life style change" where you can stilleat these type of foods?
I am Jamaican too. I lost 40 lbs and it was hard mainly because of the rice and flour. I had to cut my portions significantly. And I switched to whole grain brown rice. Another thing I did was cook my plantain in the oven rather than fry it on the stove.
It's still really hard at family get togethers because there is sooooo much good food! I actually gained back 10 lbs so I'm working hard to get those back off and then some.

Hey, Trini to de Bone here! :>
Losing weight is definetly harder on "Island People" when most of our foods include.. rice, and flour etc.

Hey, I have been diagnosed seven years now.
I am now noticing a increasing headaches, has anyone had these problems.
Also has anyone had any headway without using conventional meds. Maybe using herbs?

hello there, fellow cyster, lol although I'm not Trinidadian, I'm Belizean so I guess that makes us distant cousins!

I haven't been formally diagnosed but I've been dealing with symptoms for about 10+ years. I just contacted a doctor and hopefully I can get an appointment soon.

Anyway, just wanted to reach out...

Nubien, DoggieMom, and revolutionista - welcome to the board and the thread. I live in St Lucia so as Revolutionista said a "distant cousin". I was diagnosed when I lived in the States, but have been trying to deal with my symptoms naturally by eating healthy and dropping some pounds.

Good luck! If you need anything, please let me know.

There is a Caribbean Cysters Social group if you wanted to join as well.
