Thread: First Time on Provera -- Experiences?

  1. #1

Thumbs down First Time on Provera -- Experiences?

My last cycle was on May 27th and to kick start it again my OB/GYN recently put me on 5 days of Provera. I have never been on Provera nor do I have an actual PCOS diagnosis (it's in the works - I'm going to see my GP soon to hopefully get a referral to an Endo).

I took my last pill on Sunday (07/27) and I'm going to DIE! Horrible stabbing cramps, nausea, lethargy and any pressure on my breasts causes uncomfortable pain (which I have never had with PMS before). To add insult to injury, ever since Sunday I have been also been spotting. I *wanted* to wait it out for a couple more weeks to see if my cycle would start, but I'm not sure if this normal or not.

I hated Provera as well. Between the horrible cramping and the super heavy flow of blood, it left me incapacitated for several days. And my periods were never like that before. After I took it that one time, I stopped taking it because I couldn't deal with the effects.
My dr did prescribe a gentler alternative, called Prometrium, and it initiated more normal periods for me. I really liked Prometrium.

hmm I might speak with my doctor about Prometrium. The Provera seemed way too overwhelming for my system. Still no AF but everything else is going strong!

My 18 year old DD was just given Provera for the first time today. She has been without a period for almost 10 months. After reading here I am a little worried about how the Provera will affect her. She will be starting a BCP to keep her regulated so hopefully this will be the only time she will have to take it.

Thumbs down Taken Provera since Dec 07

I have not been diagnosed with PCOS but have many symptoms that point to that. After horribly irregular periods and no ovulation, my Gyno has me take Provera for 7 days every 6 weeks to induce bleeding. I'm so miserable when it happens, it's hard to tell what is induced by Provera. My experience over the 8 months or so is that it did its job with inducing bleeding, but nothin was there to stop it. Even though I had an enduced period every six weeks, they would still drag on for 10 - 11 days of pure hell, cramping, clotting, nausea, not fun. My major problem is that after starting the Provera, the normal pains I would get from ovarian cysts rupturing was a lot more frequent and a lot worse. I went to ER one night for one that was 7.8 cm. I don't know if my symptoms and whatever I have may cause something different than you (if you have a diagnosis of PCOS) but I have had a cyst on either my right or left ovary since around May. (I'm typing right now with a bleeding 4.5 cm cyst on the right). After this last week of Provera coming up my brand new dr is starting me on Yaz and hopefully we'll work from there.

Im hypothyroid too and still being regulated - for extra info. Sorry for the long post. Hope I helped, a little. I may not know much about what I have yet, but I do know that Provera wasn't exactly the "wonder drug" my former dr thought it was. Still had all the other problems too.

    Good Luck

I am on day 7 of 12 on Provera. This is my first time taking it.

I've felt a little more depressed then usual - my dreams sure are a little weirder and I have been a bit constipated, but other then that, I seem to be swell.

I've had some random spotting, but I think that is normal?

Provera = nightmare for me. I shudder at past experiences. I cringe at the thought of the pain and want to cry and the though of how it made me feel. I was sick to my stomach from about the 2nd day of taking it to about a week or 2 after finishing it. I bled so heavy....my old dr told me that would only happen the 1st time I took it. Ok, so why did it happen the 2nd and 3rd time? My current dr wants me to take it again, just to try, and she doesn't understand what it does to me.

I think if I haven't had a period by November that I am going to ask about Prometrium also.

DD on day 7 of Provera and so far so good. She has mentioned nightmares last two nights. Is this from the Provera??? Also having occasional cramps but nothing bad. 3 more days to go!

I hate provera and won't take it again. It causes me to have horrible cramps when i do get my period but my emotional state before that is ridiculous. I cry at the drop of a hat, and of course I kept doing it at work and was such a wreck.

I had cramping while taking Provera and up until AF came (then they were REALLY bad!). The nightmares *could* be from the Provera, the cocktail of hormones in you system while taking it could project in different ways. I know I was an emotional train wreck (moreso ha!) on and after taking it

I have noticed that I had very vivid dreams on Provera. I don't remember if I had more nightmares, but I did have vivid dreams.
