Default I don't seem to heal or get better very easily!

I'm not sure if this is at all related to PCOS, but I thought I'd give it a shot and see if anyone else has this problem. I don't seem to heal like most people do. For example, when I get sick, I take forever to get better. A simple cold, will almost always turn into bronchitis or walking pneumonia. When I hurt myself, it either takes forever to fully recover, or I just don't heal on my own and need surgery. I have had numerous operations for problems that normally go away after time, like tendonitis. When I sprain something, it takes months to heal. I bruise easily and cuts take forever to heal. I have been tested for Diabetes (I am IR) and anemia but both are negative. I wasn't breastfed, and I have heard rumors that say that can cause problems with your immune system. It wouldn't be so odd, if it was just once or twice that this happened. But it just seems that my body never heals very easily. I know that PCOS is an endocrine disorder, and the endocrine system has a lot to do with bodily functions, so I guess that's why I'm thinking it can be related. Just wondering if anyone out there has this problem too. Thanks!

    Unhappy Decreased healing

I'm new to this "wonderful" site, but just wanted to add, that I am IR and am newly diagnosed with PCOS.
I broke my collarbone in Feb. of this year, and its not healing to my Ortho dr's liking so much so I have had to wear a bone stimulator now. Also I had a tooth extracted (long story) and got a dry socket. Its still now not healed 10days post even after antibiotics!!
I keep getting told the decreased healing to all things like you mentioned -cuts, scrapes and the above is all IR related-I haven't heard anything about it being PCOS related I'm afraid.
Not sure if this will help you or not.

While I haven't suffered any major illness or injury, I have noticed that when I have a minor cut or scrape, it heals faster if I avoid anything sugary while I'm healing. I stick to healthy proteins and high fiber carbs until I'm healed and it gets better much quicker.

I am the same way...When I am sick, it takes me longer to get well and I am sicker than dh and kids...I am can't function when I am sick. When I have a sore, I have to doctor it all the time or it will take a while to heal...So, yes I am the same way...

i am not completely sure, but i think it has to do with the insulin resistence. i have heard from diabetics i know that they have a tough time healing wounds. one woman i worked with was always really careful with anything she did because she said that it took her forever to heal anything.

i have this issue a little bit, but not to the extent you do. i am so sorry you are having to go through this!

I never really considered IR to be the cause of my problems. I know that diabetics have a hard time healing wounds, so I guess it would make sense that IR would cause similar problems. I wonder if diabetics have a harder time healing injuries that aren't wounds? The little wounds aren't a huge problem for me, it's the bigger injuries, like sprains and the illnesses that are really affecting me. I was just put on Met a few months ago, and last time I went to the doc my insulin levels were back to normal, so hopefully I'll start to heal easier now? I've been trying to find some info on this, but all I can find are articles about wounds not healing. Next time I go to the doctor, I'll ask her.

flyfisher: when you have a sore that doesn't heal and you go to the doctor, what do they do for you to help you heal faster? Antibiotics? I have never gone to the doctor for a sore, but if they can help me heal faster than I can with just neosporin and a bandaid, then I'll go!

You know what else I have noticed that really sucks, when get a zit, (I'm a popper and picker, I know, it's terrible), the leftover scab takes forever to heal, weeks sometimes! I have tried putting neosporin on it, but they seem to take forever! I have heard that cuts on the face take longer to heal than the rest of the body..maybe I should learn to practice self control!

That is/was me! Now when I feel like I am coming down with a cold or flu I start taking NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine link http://www.wholehealthmd.com/ME2/dir...51CA4D3&tier=2 ) I used to get bronchitis at least 3 times a year starting when I was a child, I haven't had it since I learned about taking NAC about 5 years ago. Also before I discovered NAC I had 3 bouts of pneumonia, hasn't happened since. I love the stuff!

I do tend to take a long time healing I injured my arm back at the start of June and am still having problems with it. I cut my finger several weeks ago and while it looks healed, it is still extremely sensitive.

When I get a cold it becomes me being out of work for 3 days! It's just not a cold it turns into fever and achy and sweating!! It's rediculous. I'm glad you asked the question cause I thought I was crazy! LOL

I have never broke anything bone wise, but when I'm sick I usually stay drugged up on nyquil and advil! :-)

I'm with you on the picking and popping LOL, and I've noticed the same thing, its just the IR I swear to it.
Im a paramedic and nursings student and have also never gone to my Dr's for a sore, but I don't know how bad that person's sore was.
Me I just use neosporin and fresh air while keeping clean!!

Thanks for the tip! I will try anything at this point! I hate being sick for such long periods of time, it makes me miss more work or infect everyone else at work! Thanks!

Lol, don't worry, if you're crazy, I'm crazy with you! I know exactly what you mean, when everyone else at work gets a cold, they can easily come back to work after a day and be fine. It takes me a few days to even get my fever down sometimes! It's so frustrating, I always wonder if my boss thinks I'm "faking" it since I reacted different than most people at work! I started taking Airborne when I feel a cold coming, or if I know I'll be around others that are sick, and I take Zicam when I do get a cold and I think they help a lot. I know there have been some debates on how effective Airborne is, but it's better than nothing for me!

Taking a long time to heal does seem to be a hallmark of diabetes. Like a lot of posters mentioned, my diet seems to play a big part, too. If I don't eat right, I get sick. I spent the Fourth of July weekend sick with the worst cold I've had in years. The only vegetables I ate during June were sugar beets and corn syrup, and I'm sure that's why I got so sick, if I'd been eating healthy I would have fought it off in a few days, not 2 weeks.

I don't know much about IR, but have any of you read about Cushing's Disease? I learned about it on this site and found it really interesting. You may want to look into that! I don't know the link, but it you use the search link above you should be able to find it!
