Default What's the best bcp for PCOS?

My gyno put me on desogen and said it would help regulate periods, reduce hair loss and excess body hair.

Is it the best pill to be on for PCOS, though?

    What's everybody else taking?

I take Yasmin, and it's awesome.

    I've taken Demulin (excellent)
    Ortho Cyclene (awful)
    LoEstrin Fe (okay)

I have to agree Yasmin! I recently had to go off it before my surgery and let me tell you I can't wait to go back on!

What makes Yasmin so ideal? What benefits have you had using it?

I take ovcon-35 and my doctor said it was good because low in progesterone. But I am using it as a hormone replacement as I have had a hysterectomy. Yasmin I tried but it has a diuertic (spelling) which caused me some problems as I already have bladder problems.

I definitely agree that it's Yasmin!

Yasmin, in combination with the Spiro I'm on, has greatly reduced my blood pressure, as well as started slowing hair growth on my face, and I've stopped losing hair on top of my head. I haven't grown any back yet, but I've only been on the Yasmin for 3 months. It's completely regulated my period, I don't have any acne, and I have not gained any weight on it!

But, my insurance doesn't cover it, so it's going to cost me $30.00 a month once my samples run out.

    Question

I am about to visit the Doctor to get on BCP's. The last time I was on BCP's was when I was 16 an then only for 6 months. I read all of the great comments about Yasmin but I am not sure which to ask for? This is a new Doctor for me and I am not sure if he knows much about PCOS. I am not sure if he will pay attention to my Sx's so I am asking for your general knowledge and opinions on what to ask for. I want to reduce hair growth and avoid drastic weight gain. I can deal with the moods. Any ideas?

I have been on Desogen since early 2000 and I call it my life saver. The first three months were hell. I had A LOT of bleeding and wa sometimes taking 4 pills a day. But after my body adjusted I feel great with it. I never had problems with hair loss or excess hair but I did with weight gain. When I started Desogen I lost 20 lbs and am able to lose weight by diet and exercise now. Also the number of cysts in my ovaries decreased considerably. My gyno says he uses Desogen for a lot of his patients and most of them do very well. The only thing is he says that you can not smoke and take it.

    Sherbear -

My insurance does not usually cover BCP either... they consider it to not be their responsibility to cover contraceptives.
But... my doctor has written a letter to them stating that the BCPs are not for contraception, that they are medically necessary to regulate my cycles due to PCOS. So my insurance is going to start covering them.
Perhaps you could ask your insurance about covering them if they are medically necessary and they recieve a letter from your doctor.

    Good luck!

I've been on Yasmin for lose to a year now, but before that I was on Desogen. I believe that before Yasmin came out, Desogen was the PCOS BCP of choice, due to low levels of androgens and the estrogen/progesterone balance. You may want to tryot Desogen for a few months and switch to Yasmin if you are not satisfied.

BTW, I switched to Yasmin because I heard it was the best for PCOS, but I have had more side effects from the Yasmin than I did from Desogen.

    Good luck!

    Smile HEY!

I've heard a lot of really great things from you guys about Desogen and Yasmin but I have a question???? What about migraines as side effects? I have a lot of migraine trouble and my doc switched my bc from Ortho Cyclen to Micronor because of my headaches. Do any of you suffer from headaches as a side effect?

No headaches for me. My side effects are pretty much gone after a few months on Yasmin; I do get lower back pain during AF and once in a while a little spotting, but that's about it. Oh, and I need to drink more water than I used to, to stay well hydrated, but that's good for me anyway.

I have noticed that my facial hair is slower to grow. Yay.

Tried Ortho-Tri, terrible terrible. Mircette saved my life. Then tried Yasmin which was OK but had some side effects.

Now I'm back on Kariva (generic Mircette) with a low dose of Spiro. Ten bucks a month and I'm in a deliciously good mood.

I took that quiz and I'm Curry Flavored, how cool is that?

I had migraines befor I started taking Desogen. I have noticed that I have fewer migraines (down to 1 a month) but I can't say what effect Desogen has had on that. It has balanced out my hormones and if that is what was causing my migraines then i guess it has helped them. But it is definitely not a side effect for me.
