Default what do these terms mean?

I'm just now getting around to reading the pathology report for myself like 9 months later........

can anyone tell me what this means:

    diagnosis:
uterine contents: degenerating and necrotic products of conception

sections show largely necrotic tissue consisting of necrotic decidua and immature chorionic villi. blood is also present.

I dont know what any of those words mean
(other than the obvious you had a miscarriage)

I can always google them I guess, but I thought maybe someone here might know?

    I'm sorry for your loss.

I am just guessing, but degenerating sound like the baby (Whether it was sac, fetal pole, etc...) was starting to get reabsorbed by the body. The body tries to break it down before passing it...

Necrotic sounds like it would be dead. So, that would cause the degeneration. (I googled it after I typed that, it does basically mean dead.)

I think what it breaks down to, in summary, is that the "products of conception" (I hate that term.) had already stopped growing, and was already being broke down for the body to expel it.

The presence of blood might indicate that the lining was already breaking down as well, which would mean that the body was also already trying to expel it.

Necrotic and degenerating products of conception basically means the embyonic tissue is dead and decaying.

decidua and immature chorionic villi- mean remains of baby and the immature beginnings of a placenta. The blood present part is self explanatory.

Basically, the whole thing is a fancy way to say that you showed signs of a miscarriage. Hope that helps you out some.

    thanks
I just wanted to make sure I wasnt missing anything
I figured it was just fancy doctor speak lol

the tissue they examined was after 4 weeks of heavy bleeding and clotting
I just assumed it was a bad period as I had in the past and didnt think twice about it until that tissue came out then I went to the ER

I've put off reading that piece of paper for so long
I knew if there was anything important the doctor would've told me

It's really upsetting to think that all the world will ever think of my baby is that it was "products of conception"

Amy, we don't use terms like that around here for the babies we loved/love. That might be on someone's piece of paper, but our feelings about our little ones will be much better understood in this forum than in a doctor's office. I'm sorry that's the terminology for something so precious to us.

I think what's important in the report is that there wasn't infection or inflammation when it came to you or your uterus. That can cause trouble in the future, so it's good that it didn't include anything like that.

(((Hugs))) I totally understand looking at those types of things WAY later than if it was for some other type of medical procedure, like a sprained elbow. In fact, there are still some things I need to get done regarding Mary Catherine's birth, five years ago. **Sigh** When we're ready.

We don't think of your baby as just a product of conception. We know the truth. Hugs to you cyster. I'm sorry for your loss.

It amazes me when people tell others to 'get over it', but have never experienced the situation to realize how painful it can be. Hugs!!
