Thread: Question about restarting Metformin

    Default Question about restarting Metformin

Hi there, I'm new to this board and have a question. I had been on Metformin with great success for about 2 years. My cycles were regular (finally) and I lost a lot of weight. I got pregnant last April and went off the Metformin in my 2nd trimester. I'm now back on the Metformin after delivering my baby girl and am not having the success I had before. I'm on 2000mg a day (same as before) and my cycles are very irregular and I'm begining to gain weight (despite my efforts not to.) My question is has anyone here been on Metformin with success and had to go off for some reason and returned back to find it not work? How long before I should be seeing it work again? Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Becky

Becky - are you breast feeding? sometimes the body hangs onto to fat stores a little harder when you are BFing, plus it will make your cycles irregular, as the prolactin generated to BF disrupts the other menstrual hormones somewhat.

No additional ideas, sorry, other than irregular cycles for a few months after birth is normal. If you were pg in April 08, you had DD Jan/Feb 09 timeframe? Your hormones from pg may still be leveling out, which might be what's making your menstrual cycle wonky. I BFd, which delayed menses return by a month or two, but my cycles once they started again, took about 6 months to get back to what I would call "normal" for me... my LP was way shorter and slowly lengthened out to my normal 14 days, which proved that at least my progesterone levels were still wacked out after pregnancy.

As for the weight gain, I don't know. I haven't read too many instances of ladies thinking that Met didn't work after re-starting, but everyone is different. Perhaps it might be worth talking to your doctor, to see if there is anything he/she could change to work better for you. Also, are you getting your Rx from the same place? Sometimes generics work differently, even though they are supposed to be the same medication. Generics vary from pharmacy to pharmacy, so that might be something to check out. Perhaps it's a generic made by a different company? sorry I can't be more helpful. Dianna
