Thread: Leg Cramps!

    Default Leg Cramps!

So I was diagnosed with PCOS about a year ago. It took me about 3 years to get any doctor to take me seriously! Anyway, They put me on Levora (BC) and then spirnolactone and after about 3 weeks of taking that I started having INTENSE leg cramps. Like the charlie horses. A friend of mine called 911 once because she was so scared she didn't know what was happening to me. It is crippling I get them in both calves at the same time and it lasts up to 30 minutes! My endocrinologist said that it is as far as he knows not related to the meds or PCOS. So I stoppped taking it and they stopped, for a while..and now they are back! It's so annoying to be paranoid all day if it's going to happen while I'm driving or at work. Does anyone else have this problem? I want to make another appointment with my Dr but I wanted to see if I can relate it to PCOS or not. Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure if it's related to PCOS, but I get them too. I don't think it's related because I even got them pretty bad as a kid.

I looked into it a few years ago and the most common cause is dehydration. Drink lots of water and maybe even a Gatorade. When I found this out I had a glass of Gatorade every day for a while (back when I didn't know the value of drinking lots of water) and they went away. I still get them from time to time now, but I take it as a sign that I need to increase my water consumption - and they go away again!

I have these too. I hate them more than anything and the pain is nearly unbareable. I've been getting them for quite a few years now, mostly during the night and they wake me up. I always wake up screaming and crying and my mom knows exactly what it is. She comes in and massages my leg till it goes away. Even after it quits, my whole calf is sore for atleast a day. I had one the other day and it was during the day, after it passed I couldn't even hardly walk the rest of the day. My mother said a lot of pregnant women get them because of flucuwating (SP) hormones and with PCOS hormones are usually pretty crazy so I think they are sort of related. I've never got them in both legs though, not at the same time. Poor you, IDK what the heck I would do if that happened.

    POTASSIUM!
Ladies, You need more Potassium in your diets.
If you are exercising -- be sure to stretch before and after to reduce lactic acid build up in the muscles.
But, try to eat a banana each day -- that will help as well.

Your the winner!!! I currently take potassium supplements. Mines was so low. Mine sgot low dueto the BP pills i take. They pulled the potassium out of my body, and i didnt eat bananas and OJ was out the uestion due to the sugar. I starte dtaking the pills and i dont have them anymore, however, you should really get your potassium levels checked. It has a lot to do with your heart, because thats a muscle too.

I get leg cramps too, but mine are in the thigh. I know what you mean about them being crippling. The pain is insanely bad. I know the dehydration thing is a big cause, also the potassium, but I read somewhere that a lack of calcium is also a factor. So I began taking calcium/magnesium tablets and found that I have few leg cramps now. I notice that I still do get them if I have not drank a lot of water the day before or if I have drank a lot of booze, (lol, girls I am not an alcoholic). Then I do know it is from dehydration. Hope that you can find something that works well for you! Good luck.

I get them alot too but only at night when I am sleeping so peacefully, then BAM ! I wake up crying and my DF has to snap me out of it and tells me to point my toes to the ceiling and that always makes them go away faster. But I have also been told its my potassium levels and possibly I am too dehydrated. So drink lots of water and eat some bananas !! I will have to check out the potassium supplement that sounds way better than eating a banana everyday... GL !!

Yeah i used to get them in the middle of the night out of nowhere, only my right calf though, its so agonizing!
To top it off it would pull my muscle and I'd end up with a torn muscle feeling for days afterward!

My Mum said it was lack of potassium, they went away for a little while, I've only had one this year but I loooove bananas!
