Hey, I've started noticing my hair on my head thinning. I've alway had very thick hair, but now it's feeling like it's flat. You can also see my scalp a little bit at the roots when my hair is wet! Is there anything that may help prevent this from getting worse? Family thinks it's stress.. could it be pcos related?

Meh, of all the hair that could of thinned/disappeared.. it had to be the hair on my head not so lucky hey?

OH yes it can be PCOS related, high testosterone levels can induce hair loss, especially if you have "male pattern hair loss" in your family history.
    Wish you well,

I'm having the same problem. My thyroid is normal, so it must be PCOS related. I used to have so much hair and now my hair is really thin. You can see my scalp when I pull my hair in pony tail. I hate it!

Is there anything that can be done to combat this? Will getting control of my PCOS mean that the hair will return on my scalp?

Hair loss is definitely PCOS related. And getting control of your PCOS won't make hair grow back, but it will slow/stop hair loss. Things you can do:

    Reduce your stress (HA, right?!)
Use hair growth stimulating shampoo/conditioner - I use Nioxin and it seems to help
Also Vit E supplements can help

Talk to your hairdresser and doctor. They can offer more advice.

I was going to also suggest Nioxin. They have really good supplements that help your hair and nails grow. Also...I started using a generic brand of Rogaine that I buy from Target. I see a change in my hair. A year ago I struggled to cover my balding scalp....now....not such a struggle. I was also not able to wear bangs cause my hair was too stringy. Now I can wear a side bang. I know my hair will never be as thick as it once was.....but every little bit helps. Also.....don't use conditioner everyday. Alot of them have agents that can cause a build up on the scalp. Condition ONLY the ends of your hair when needed. I did hair for over 10 years, and will be more than happy to answer any direct questions you may have.

I am dealing with this too. I had thin and fine hair to begin with so its extremely obvious.

My doctor told me that people are like animals and shed from time to time. So I went to see another doctor about 4 years ago for this problem. My hair was literally falling out. I could pull handfulls at a time out just running my fingers through my hair. So I saw a Derm. He believed the PCOS story, and ran more tests. I was put on spirnolaton (sp?). Its a blood pressure medication, but in low doses helps prevent growth of hair in women. It also helped my hair from falling out! My hair is not any thicker than it was, but its not falling out now.

I just keep my hair cut shorter than I use it. In high school it was down past my butt, now its kept at shoulder length. I did grow it out long enough to donate 12 inches to locks of love, but did not like how stringy it would look. So back to shorter hair!

24, known I have PCOS since i was 16, RX'd in 2006, older sister also has PCOS.
