Temple Study Says Drug-Free Treatment An Option

An often undiagnosed condition can lead to problems for some women trying get pregnant. But now, they may find an answer in an age-old treatment.



The condition is called polycystic ovarian syndrome -- or PCOS. And doctors say up to 35 percent of women may suffer from it.

But because of its wide variety of symptoms, PCOS often goes undiagnosed. Hormonal drugs often prescribed can have many side effects.

Now a Philadelphia doctor thinks acupuncture may be a drug-free option.

For years, Grace Ecclestone suffered with PCOS: weight gain, excessive hair growth, irregular periods -- and difficulty getting pregnant.

Then she participated in a small acupuncture study by Dr. Abigail Lorico of Temple University Hospital.

Five out of five patients were successfully treated with their periods regulated.

And even Lorico was surprised at the success Ecclestone had-- she was finally able to get pregnant.need attribution

"I don't think that I really grasped the importance for me of becoming a mom until I was pregnant," Ecclestone said. "And then I said, 'Oh wow. This is really great!'"

Pregnant women may worry about antibiotics, X-rays and anesthesia at the dentist's office, but a bigger threat to baby comes from mom's teeth and gums.

Dental disease could lead to infections that can affect the baby's development. So get regular cleanings-- and tell your dentist about any bleeding from your gums.
