***Progesterone Information***

I have a question. The NPC from GNC comes in a 2 ounce package. It lists in the ingredients that it contains 5mg of progesterone per ounce. How would that work if you're trying to get 20mg per dose per day? Thanks!

That's odd... what else is in it? Most 2oz of natural progesterone cream contain at least 1000mg. Like this one...

I imagine it just depends on the brand/type of NPC you get but I don't know for sure why your has so little?

I actually don't have the GNC brand, but I was just looking on their website to see where I could get NPC in Canada. Here's the link.

Maybe it's just that brand? Here is a list of places that carry progesterone cream. I would just call/visit their websites and look for one that has the highest amount of natural progesterone cream in it's main active ingredients, and that delievers or has a store in your area. Also keep in mind that in Canada, some places call NPC Wild Yam Cream.

I have seen wild yam cream. I actually just saw it today at a natural nutrition store. I never thought to check the ingredients. Would it list the amount of progesterone even if it was a wild yam cream?

You know I don't know? I imagine it should, but I don't know for sure- I haven't even seen it in the USA. I just remembered reading about them being the same thing. You might ask the UK or Canadian cysters on the alternative remedies board? Sorry I couldn't help more...

sugarbug - Maybe you can answer this...I'm on a progesterone cream that my RE had a pharmacist compound and I insert it vaginally...do you think this is different (more effective) than the kind you rub on the skin. I wonder if it is similar to Crinone?

It sounds like your describing progesterone suppositories... they are compounded with peanut oil, into a bullet-shaped vaginal suppository? If those are what your talking about, then yes, (in my opinion) I think they are 2nd best to progesterone in oil injections. The effects of progesterone supps show up in blood tests unlike Crinone... That's a bonus because it makes your progesterone levels in pregnancy easier to control.

They are not in a pill form. I have this tube of cream that I meaure out into a tampon-like applicator and insert. That's why I'm not sure exactly what it is...weird huh? Maybe it's like the stuff in the pill?

Maybe your pharmacy doesn't compound it the same? It could be crinone, but my guess is, it's still probably just regular progesterone. Can your DR meassure your progesterone levels in blood? That's one way to tell.... But don't worry- I have actually heard of another cyster that uses that kind of applicator for her supps. I was just pretty sure it wasn't a cream form, but I could be wrong! Progesterone supps are funny in all the forms they come in- from bullet shaped waxy supps to pearls to creams. As long as your taking it- your ahead of the game! :p

I'm not tcc or preggers (I hope so soon) but I wanted to thank you for your information. When I was tested my progesterone was very low. I wasn't aware that it could cause trouble in pregnacy. PCOS runs through our family and my mother and her sisters had terrible trouble with miscarriage. My aunt would almost be to term but then miscarry. If they had the information I know then maybe they could have avoided the heartbreak. Now that I know, when I do decide to ttc, I will be more informed!

I am very aware of the benefits of progesterone and have been on it for all 3 of my pregnancies. The first one was similar to your story, I was on progesterone cream, we saw the babies heartbeat at 9weeks and the dr. said I didn't need the cream anymore. I went off it and 2 weeks later m/c my first baby.

The second time I was on 100mg suppositories twice a day, but I didn't start them until 6 weeks into the pregnancy. I m/c that baby as well.

I just found out I am pg again. I am terrified. I have been on 50mg suppositories twice a day since 3dpo. We just got back my progesterone level at 15dpo and it is only 11.2. I will be upping my dose to 100mg twice a day starting today.

Do you think I should take 3 suppositories a day? I will do anything to keep this baby.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in May and started Metformin in June. This was my first full cycle on the Met. I was really hoping that this would make a difference in my progesterone levels. But obviously it didn't. Am I doomed to suffer the same fate?

The problem is that I am seeing a Dr. outside my insurance and she is expensive. She is the one that diagnosed me with PCOS and put me on met. The only problem is that she isn't an OB/BYN and doesn't deliver babies. I have an appointment with an OB tomorrow, but what if he doesn't go along with her treatment plan? I am so nervous. These early stages of pregnancy are so critical. I need my P4 levels tested periodically so I can up the dose if need be. I wish I could just be my own dr. and order blood tests for myself!

It definitely can't hurt! Although with how low your level is- I would suggest going to your DR and getting a PIO shot ASAP at least to get that level up to above 15. See if that one shot makes a difference on a repeat P4 test, and if so- then continue on them, but make sure to still take your supps while waiting! There is no such thing as too much progesterone- it can only help. If it makes you feel better, I did three supps a day (once I became allergic to the PIO shots) with met, and have had this successful pregnancy. Even now at 35 weeks I'm still taking 2 supps a day! :p I'm sorry for the losses you've had, and wish you the best in this pregnancy!
