Default Sick and tired of PCOS!

Hey everyone,
I gained a bunch of weight while on an antidepressant. When I quit taking it I tried desperately to lose weight (for more than 2 years!) Last year I was diagnosed with PCOS and prescribed metformin. I was supposed to take 1500 mg but never got past 500 because of the stomach issues. I didnt lose or gain while taking the met, so I quit. I started gaining steadily since qutting the met (its been about 3 months i put on 22 pounds) despite my 1600-1800 calorie a day diet and working out 6/7 days a week AND I work with a personal trainer weekly. She was shocked I gained, she said most people would lose 2-4 pounds a week doing what I am doing. I went back to my dr. and she referred me to an endocronologist, my appt is next week. SO my question is, do you think if I had taken the 1500 of metformin I would have been able to lose weight? I have acne from the PCOS that wont go away even though i've been on a retanoid for 6 months. I also have low energy levels.. Do you guys have any reccomendations for weightloss and the other symptoms? I eat about 40% carbs 60%protein. I know metformin isnt a weightloss drug. I just want my body on an even playing field with others who dont have PCOS. I have 95 pounds to lose. I hate to say it, but I go to a weightloss forum and see women that are/were my weight losing 15 pounds a month and I get really jealous and angry. Why can't I lose anything? even 1200 calories a day I maintain (even while on met) Someone help please!

Alot of people have had good results with Metformin. I have just started it and worked up too 1000mg a day..Next week I will start taking the 3rd dose a day. I have stomache upset sometimes but not so bad I cant stand it. I think if it will help my problems, stomache issues can wait. I have always had them anyways. I understand about the weight. I can lose it either, Now maybe after my dagnosis and my meds and trying to have a healthier lifestyle, I can. My nursing instructor told my mom that the weight will practically fall of with these meds..Soo..And, another thing I have read. With most people, the side effects wear off..So try to hang in there!!

Met works differently on everybody. How and when are you taking you met? I take mine in the morning time with food. I take my first bite and then my pill and it doesn't bother me at all. I am currently on 1000 mg a day. And you are doing excellent with your diet & exercise!!!!!!!!!!! Very disciplined. I wish I could be like that!!! I have only lost 8 pounds with the met and I have been on it for 2 months. I think that is pretty good being I don't exercise on the regular and I don't eat the way I am supposed to eat! But you are on the best track maybe there is something deeper that is going on and the endocrinologist can pin point it. Then when they do your weight will be gone pretty fast because you are on it!

I've been in your shoes (90 pounds to lose), and even without knowing how long and hard you're working out, I think your trainer is leading you down the wrong path, in terms of expectations.

>> MUST READ ARTICLE: Losing 3-4 pounds in four weeks doesn't sound exciting does it?

>> Most women can only lose about 0.5 - 1.5 pounds of fat per week - PCOS or no PCOS

On other threads, I've encouraged people to pick up the book Where Did All The Fat Go by Dr Rob Huizenga. He is the doctor who created the weight loss program followed by all contestants on all seasons of The Biggest Loser. The book follows the weekly workouts/diet/weight loss of the season 3 participants who were working out at home - and not at the ranch.

Starting week 1, they're walking/running 4 to 5 miles every morning, 6 days a week for an hour, and then at night, they're working out another 60-90 minutes. In other words, they're working out 2 to 2.5 hours every day...6 days a week. Their calories are in the 1250-1500 range.

On average, the women are losing about 1% of their body weight each week - not '15 pounds a month, every month' - and I don't recall ANY back-to-back WEEKS where women lost 4 pounds (of bodyfat) per week. While pcos isn't mentioned in the book, it's entirely possible that one or two (maybe more) of the women in the book have pcos, but not 'all' of them.

Another thing that's interesting in the book is that Dr H points out that in the first few weeks, some people might show a 'weight' gain on the scale due to water retention. That volume of exercise causes your muscles to swell. But body fat loss is still happening.

In the current pcos bootcamp at Fit Cysters, we're following the 2-a-day protocol in Dr H's book. Those following the closest, are losing at the rate in the book.

Unfortunately, many trainers don't REALLY understand about losing 'fat', and many exercisers underestimate just what's involved in even losing a 'pound' of body fat (with or without pcos).

Get the book. It might help you find ways to tweak your current program. You're clearly willing to put in the time, the book might help you get more 'bang for your buck', and will give you a better baseline to compare your results to.

I hear you...and if I were you, I'd TOTALLY tune out people saying they're losing 15 pounds a month...It simply isn't 'reality'.

Even playing field with MAX effort (ie 2 to 2.5 hours a day of intense exercise and calories in the 1500 range) will return a loss of about 1% of body weight - not 2 to 4 pounds of body fat loss per week. But that's ok. Even at 1%...you'll still get there at a rate that will seem lightening fast.

By the third week in this current PCOS bootcamp, most of us were a size smaller, and going into the 3rd week, we had decided to not to buy any more clothes until the end of camp, because we're shrinking so fast.

get the book, it's really a great read!

I have also never been able to lose weight. In high school I was athletic so I was never really overweight. Then I put on the freshmen 15 for two years in college. After the initial 30 lbs I didn't gain anymore but no matter what I did I couldn't lose weight. I would work out at least 5 times a week and eat really healthy. I didn't even have that high of expectations. I just wanted to lose an average of a pound a week but always nothing. I would usually try for about a month or two before I would give up. I would go back to not really paying attention to what I was eating and working out occasionally. The weird thing is I wouldn't seem to gain weight either. Now after I had my baby and developed GD I am seeing an endo and she just started me on met Wed. So I have only taken two days and for the first week she only has me taking 500mg. I'll bump up to 1000 next week. Hopefully this and a low carb diet and exercise will finally get the numbers to change on the scale.

To loose 15 pounds in a month is not healthy! and not really doable even with 2-3 hours of exercise a day.I am a veggie and eat fairly healthy for the most part and I work out an hour 5-6 times a week and sometimes i do throw in more cardio depending on how i feel, I also weight train 3-4 times a week, I have 40 pounds to loose and have lost 14 pounds in 3 MONTHS and that's on a 1200 calorie diet, it takes time trust me and you don't want it to happen over night,it is safer and healthier for it to come off the right way that way it will stay off, remember it's not short term weight loss it's for the rest of your life.Having PCOS does not help but a change in lifestyle, food and exercise will start to pay off, I lost my 14 pounds through a low carb lifetsyle and less processed foods, veggies, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, no carbonated drinks!! no refined processed foods like white breads, white rice, pastries etc...and limit your sugar as much as you can.Eat good fats like avocado,I eat foods that don't have many ingredients in the list!Manufacturers will fill foods with so much junk and fillers for it to taste better stripping the food from all it's nutrients, they don't care about our wastlines or our health, their goal is to just sell more! So be a savvy label reader and pick foods from the ground and make your own foods where you control what goes in it and gets the best nutrition and I promise the weight will fall off like it is for me.If you eat meats, go for lean ones like chicken, turkey and salmon.
I started metform 4 days ago and i was prescribed it to help regulate my cycles, I had been controlling my fasting glucose pretty well with lifestyle changes but the metformin does target that so it will help and bring on the flow! There is no shortcut to loosing weight, but don't treat it as a diet it is a lifestyle change and it's not just because you have pcos but because it's just a healthier way to eat and when you eat right the weight will fall off without much effort and the exercise will speed up the process and in turn help with your pcos symptons. You can do it and everyone on this board is here to help you, we are all in it together!
