Gas, stomach cramping and diarrhea .. anything more then that and you should call your doctor or pharmist (for example chills, sweating, etc.) Here are some good tips while you are on the Met ...
1) Take it at the same time everyday
2) Ask your doctor about taking an extended release version or taking
two smaller doses at separate times
3) Take it with a spoonful of peanut butter
4) Avoid leafy and "watery" vegetables such as lettuce and celery
5) Take it during the middle of the meal so that there is food around
it to "cushion" it
6) Take it with a calcium supplement or a large glass of milk
7) Eat yogurt daily
8) Avoid extremely high fat foods and greasy foods
9) Avoid alcohol
10) Keep hydrated
11) Increase your fiber intake

Thanks for the tips. One question though. Why does everyone say to stay away from lettuce? Maybe I will find out b/c I had a salad with dinner right before I took my first pill.

You can eat them but just sandwich them in between some fiber, otherwise you will get diarrhea. I am not sure exactly why, but it happens. One time I ignored the advice and I had to knock my poor husband out of the way to get to the bathroom. I almost didn't make it! Oh and yes my hubby is ok!?!? Ha ha ha!

Hmm - maybe that explains my little problem at the mall on Sat. I hadn't been experiencing any of the digestive side effects - or so I thought - until I had a salad at the mall on Saturday. Let's just say that Dillard's restroom will never be the same again!
Seriously, you may not have any side effects. The above and a little bit of low blood sugar when working out are the only things I have had and I have worked up to 1500 per day.
Good luck!

Don't know why, but Iceberg lettuce and met do not play well together. For me, I have been able to eat Romaine lettuce and I don't have any problems. I've been on met for 3 years now, and soon after I eat iceberg, I get those nasty tummy grumbles.
The best advice I can give starting metformin is to be patient with yourself. You may experience fatigue, diarrhea, and some of the others the cysters mentioned above. Give yourself time to adjust to the medication- for some it takes a little longer. Try to avoid a lot of greasy or fatty foods also. Wish you all the best!

I started eating Iceberg lettuce last night at dinner (at a restaurant) and when I remembered that I shouldn't be eating it, I got really nervous and stopped immediately! However, I didn't seem to have any of those nasty side affects. I think I will still avoid it just in case. Its only my 2nd day on Met. I actually feel tired, but I'm not sure if its the Met or Jet Lag. I just got back from a two week trip to the Baltic area.

This is very good advice and I agree with it completely. I wish you the best of luck on your new "adventures" with met.

just to follow all of this great advice, I did not have ANY trouble with met until I made the jump from 1500mg to 2000mg per day. until then, it was no problem. i was so nervous to start it because i was getting married the next month and was afraid about what could happen -- like leaving my husband at the altar to get to the bathroom! good luck and try not to worry about it too much.... you will KNOW it if/wne you have any side effects!
