I know I am going to get blasted for the fact that I have not changed my eating habbits since starting met, but I haven't. I have not had solid stool since october 31st.
I understand that eating correctly can help with that, but isn't my body just supposed to get used to the medicine?
I don't consider altering your diet "getting used to" the medicine.

I have always had the GI symptoms much more so if I go on a carb binge but all in all the "cough" runs have never stopped lol... All I have read most people it does take some time more for some than others to get the body use to it.. Good news is it got rid of 8 pounds for me ... Hope it eases up for you...

I'm here. I've definitely been "hiding" though. This whole ttc/pcos/met thing is starting to depress me. And I'm not easily depressed. I'm starting to think it's the met?
I wish i could say the met was making me lose weight! with all this $%#$ diahrrea you'd think i'd weight 10 lbs by now!
Have you noticed any difference in your cycles? I had to take provera to start this cycle and will continue to do so until i get a normal length cycle on my own. I'm so sick of wasting time!!!!
Thanks for your reply and for "missing" me

Nobody's going to blast you here, we all know how hard it is to make diet changes...I put it off for a year after I started met..
The problem is, it isn't just the medicine that causes the runs..it's your body's reaction to high circulating levels of insulin. When you eat sugary or starchy foods, your body responds by cranking out a huge amount of insulin to lower your blood sugar, and most of the time that's why our side effects hit after we've eaten junk/high carbs. Met has to work so much harder to get things under control when we do that, and our poor raw butts pay the price.
I can definetly say that changing my eating habits made all the difference...not just in my weight but in my labwork and all over health. I started a tweaked version of the IR diet and within 6 months my periods finally got regular and my labwork improved after a year of barely budging. I felt clear-headed and energetic I'll never deny the difference diet can make in insulin again. And my episodes of "the runs" were pretty much eliminated. So what we eat really does make a difference.
Start out gradually..that's what I did. Make little goals like "Today I'm going to cut out potatoes and corn" or "Today I'm only going to have whole wheat bread" and start out that way. If you make sweeping changes, they will will seem so much harder to do. Take your time, ease into it, and as your body feels better it will be easier to stick to.
Good luck and feel better soon!

Thanks for your response Christy.
I guess I shouldn't knock myself too much...I have been eating whole wheat bread instead of white for a few months now as well as brown rice. I don't eat corn or fruit except for apples which i read are low on the glycemic index. I guess I have made some major steps to change my diet...maybe it's time to take the next step. I definitely have cut down on my sugar and am very aware of what goes into my mouth. I try to take it day by day, like so far today (by accident) I haven't had any sugar so I won't let myself have any for the rest of the day. I say "if i can make it this far I can make it the rest of the night".

No blasting, but I too believe diet makes a difference. I'd been a low-carber for a year before I started Met so I was fortunate enough to suffer only one putrid bout of diarrhea and a few days of light-headedness before Mets side-effects subsided. Every now and then I feel a bit exhausted but I can tell its just Met ironing out the creases (or coz I haven't had a breaky/arvo snack). And I too am losing weight despite eating more than I was pre-Met!
I hope you start feeling better.
I'm editing this to say Yeah it does sound like you're making progress. Whether by accident or not! Some people have more sensitive tums to others so that could be another reason for less solidity too.

I myself am losing weight now every single week since I started the South Beach Diet. I cut apples out and rarely eat fruits. I do
each veggies though and drink V-8 juice. I also have fat free yogurt sometimes (only one in a day) or a cafe latte.
Sometimes too I have bread. I just pick and choose my carbs since I can't have too many of them and continue to lose.

OMG!! How was i so misinformed about apples?? I swear I read that they were one of the lowest fruits on the GI. I've been eating two a day!
UGH!

Kerry, you are exactly right. Apples are made up primarily of fructose, which does not affect blood sugar/insulin the way glucose does. They have a LOWER glycemic response than fruits made mostly of glucose (like cranberries, bananas, rasberries and strawberries). Lactose (the sugar in milk) is the same way. When eaten raw, apples are a wonderful snack, full of anti-oxidents and vitamins. I have them for a snack a couple of times a week.
You may want to check out the IR diet (where I got this info from and the diet I follow). It is so common sense, and when you eat sugars with protien, it buffers the insulin spike. I can definetly eat this way for life and it worked!!
You can read the first 2 chapters of the book here:

Oh, good to know about fructose vs. glucose. I'll see if I can remember that. ;-)
I'll check out that link. Thank you!!!!

Hello from a lurker. I just wanted to thank you all for sharing. I have been on and off Metformin for a while. I just have to stop after a few months because I want to feel good for a while. You know what I mean?
I have definitely learned that the better I eat the easier it is to feel good and stop the booty from being hurt too much. LOL
Have a great New Year!
