Points: 1,380.14 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 1,380.14 | Side Effects of Synthroid My mother was diagnosed with hypothyroidism recently - her TSH is 9.88.
She just started synthroid - Dr. said to increase dosage gradually. So she took 25mg for 2 weeks and now she started with 75mg which she will take for 4 weeks and then blood test and Dr. visit to determine the dosage for her.
My mom has been feeling lot of pain in her legs (below the knees and upto her ankle). Is this side effect normal?
Can someone please share their experience on this medication?
I really appreciate it - thank you so much.
Her Dr. is out on vacation until Monday so I need some answers from you all. Thanks. |

This is normal, and will go away. Your body is trying to heal from the damage that thyroid disease did to it, and this healing process is painful.
I would recommend to your mom that she take supplements with calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D. There is a great pre-mixed pill you can buy from Schiff (fred meyer has it, and other stores too) that has all these in it and isn't a huge horse pill (minerals are bulky, it's hard to find ones that aren't huge!!).
The cal/mag will help with the muscle/joint pains of hypothyroidism. The Vit. D is necessary as your cal/vit.D ratio needs to be kept at appropriate levels.

It's weird that when you are hypo, some of the damage doesn't show until you get treatment and your body tries to act normal again.
