silly question that I probably should know the answer to
what is the exact reason to take Met with PCOS? Is it used just if you are TTC , what about if you are NOT IR? Did it help regulate you?

They use Metformin to help/reverse insulin resistance, which in turn helps with fertility. There are other uses, but I believe this is the most common reason they prescribe this to women with pcos. It isn't a silly question, there is just so much to know with pcos, you could never be caught up with all the new terms and stuff! Hope this helps~

There are a couple of other IR drugs, right? Actos is one, I think. I think that there is another one that starts with an A. Not sure what it is, though. Maybe if you check the met board?
From the FAQ thread and it should answer Lady McBoo's question too...
1. Why am I on a diabetic drug?
Met is an insulin regulator. A large number of PCOS women (although not all) have insulin resistance, where their bodies do not use the insulin their body produces efficiently. As a result, the body over-produces insulin to get their blood sugar down. So the diabetic drug Metformin/Glucophage works well with Insulin Resistant women because it opens the cell doors and helps your body use insulin more efficiently. There are other insulin regulating drugs such as Avandia & Actos, which are less prescribed, but effectively treat the same problem.
You asked about NON-IR women...and studies are showing that the resuklts fior NON-IR cysters are really good too. That's because a) the lab tests are unreliable and they may be IR when the results say thay aren't and b) there are other hormones besides insulin in PCOS that met helps.
Hope it helps!
