Since Taking Metformin have you cycles been regular or irregular??
I started taking Metformin in January and 6 weeks after I had my 1st period(The last one before that was in november) and after that they have been dead on the 28th day,(my last 4 periods) except this one I am on day 29 at the moment(I know it is only one day,and I have had very little period pain)I dont think I am pg(but it would be nice if I found out I was), Have any of you been regular since you started Metformin,or have your cycles steal been irregular?
thanks in advance
kim

I had no periods before for years before Met, so I actually started keeping a record. here is what my cycles looked like:
Started Met August 2001
2001: Oct 10/01
Nov 25/01
Dec 26/01
Feb 28/02
2002: Apr 8/02
May 10/02
July 14/02
Aug 17/02
Sept 19/02
Oct 22/02
Nov 22/02
2003: Jan 7/03
Feb 13/03
Mar 18/03
Apr 18/03
May 18/03
June 17/03
So as you can see. they were irregular for the first year on Met There was a couple of times where I had 30-some days apart and I'd think "Ok, I'm regular!". Then they'd get all bungled again. The last year (a year after starting the drug) they have been way more regular (except for the time in Nov/Dec 2002 when I was on spiro...it wreaked havoc with my periods so i discontinued it).
Hope it helps!

Please don't worry about it, that just keeps Aunt Flow outside chuckling at you.
She'll get here, or you'll get a great surprise.
Mine have been an average of 40 days since starting met eight months ago, with my shortest cycle being 35 days. This is up from my average of once per year!
Take care,
Sheri

I think I am just being inpatient, I should do as my husband would say is ''chill out!'' (if only it was that easy) I am just thinking ''woooohooo I have had 4 good months, im late that means I might be pg''. I am gonna see what happens, If my period is not here in a week ill see my gp. Then again it could be due to not taking met for a day coz I went out drinking last friday(even though I didnt drink much, I just wanted to be safe incase I did) I am steal getting the period pains so maybe its on its way.
thanks for replying!

Just wanted to share my experience, started met on 3/1 (500mg.)
I am on 1000mg. and still nothing. What I mean is no af...my last one was 3/27 (provera induced) I have felt, cramps, twinges and ovary pain but they come and go and still nothing. I know, I know
that I have to be patient but what the heck is going on. Maybe I am in that 20 % that met will not work on. I have not had a chance to go see my gyno because he said he will not up my dose, so what is the use. Anyway, just wanted to vent and tell you about my absent af.

Aww sweetie, still nothing? I was on 1500 for over 3 months before I AF'd, so I suspect your dosage is the hold up.
I think you need a second opinion, Selina. Until you have been on the minimum effective dose (1500 mg) for at least 6 months, you can't rule yourself out as a met candidate. Dosing is really individual, and you should find a Dr that will give you a chance to try the 1500 dose.
Keep us posted on you, and big HUGS! Christy

Hey Christy,
Yes, it's me again. I am leaving to Disney World next week so as soon as I get back I am making an appointment with the only endo in town he's not a RE but I will give him a try unless I beg my GYno. Christy I have a question:
How will I know if the meds are working? The only blood work my dr did was a Fast Gluco. I have read your thread as to all the blood work that should have been done. I am sure I can get my records from my re/endo 150 miles away that I last saw when I was TTC - that was in 1998.
Anyway I found an old presc. from my regular gyno that I was supposed to have they are a CBC, CMP and HGAIC . I never
had them done. Should I just go have them now? Is his missing one (lab)? That you think I might need. I will do these on Sat.
I promise, so that I can be ready for my appoint when I get back from Disney.
Christy, sorry if I got off the subject Selina

Fasting Glucose is the test for IR...sometimes Dr's run a fasting insulin, but it serves the same purpose.
The *only* way to know if your meds are working is Bloodwork. If you had elevated FSH:LH or testosterone or free androgen that led your Dr to put you on Met, those tests ahould be run again to determine if they are getting closer to normal. The CBC is a blood cell count (standard lab done each time to detect anemia), CMP is Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (kidneys, liver, and electrolyte and acid/base balance as well as of your blood sugar and blood proteins) & HGAIC is hemoglobin...another standard test. These need to be done 0nce every 6 months to 1 year, so you can decide if I want to have them now, but they won't tell anything about your period. They are simply to tell if the Met is having any adverse effects on your body and to rule out other illnesses.
Have fun on your trip...try to jut relax about AF. Until you're on the highest effective dose, you may not have luck with AF.

Kim: Something else that occurred to me...you mentioned in another post doing some drinking last weekend. There is evidence that even moderate drinking can delay the onset of periods, so this could be why you are late too this month.
Since you also went off the met for a day or so, your hormones will probably take a few days extra to get back to normal, so it's a good possibility in your case.
Hope it helps!

I started on met near the end of May. I finished a pack of bcp and had af. I stopped taking the bcp after that. I have had af on my own in July and August. I never thought I would be excited to have af without bcp. I feel sure the met worked to regulate af. Still waiting for any weight loss, though. Gotta get the carbs lower.
