I've recently been coming to terms with the fact that I would really like to have a baby...someday. But there are a lot of factors that make this seem like an impossible dream. I'm single. I really don't want to be married...not too keen on men and sex...lol. The whole PCOS/infertility thing. And the fact that my doctor is asking me to consider a hysterectomy because of the cervical cancer I'm battling.
So...I'm just wondering...is there any hope of being able to adopt..I mean, would they even consider me? Single. "Old" (35 at the moment). Health problems. Bad credit and not a real great income. A minor criminal record. And probably a hundred other things I haven't considered.
Any opinions? Advice? Suggestions?

Look at some of the links in the sticky up above. That might give you some idea of the different types of programs. I'm sorry I'm not up on all the different programs anymore. I've focused on China to extend my family and haven't looked at the other ways recently.
I can tell you that for China your marital status only means you are on a different list--China has a singles quota meaning they only allow so many single parent adoptions each year. But, besides that, your age is actually a "bonus" to China!
As for your health issues, credit, etc...in any adoption you would need to discuss all of that during your homestudy and your social worker would help you talk it out and look at the different options.
Best of luck to you. I hope your cancer battle is going well--and to see your weight loss ticker is awfully inspiring to me!!

I have been wondering about this too. Right now I'm totally not ready to do it, but I would love to give Clark a little sister. (I have been seriously thinking of China) I too had to have a hysterectomy because if I waited another year, I would of had cervical cancer. And finding a guy right now!? Yea right. So I'm glad to see that they do let single people adopt from there.
Lisa, hang in there. If you have any hyst questions, go ahead and pm me.

I too am adopting from China. My DH has a slight criminal record and we've had no issues so far. He had unpaid speeding tickets about 10 years ago which issued a warrant. It's not on his record as a warrant so we had to get letters stating he had no misdemeanors and also a his police record from the station he was arrested by. He also had to write a letter stating that he will never do it again and what he learned from it.
For China you have to make atleast 20,000/year (that would be 10,000 for each person in your home including the child you will be adopting--$30,000 for married couples).
I also know nothing about adopting from anywhere else b/c we've focused on China. I do know that each agency is completely different in what the expect and each state is completely different in what they expect. The only thing you could do is try and find out if it's possible for you to achieve your family through adoption.
I hope your cancer is cured and you're ok. Congrats on the weight lose, that's a great accomplishment!
Good Luck!
Traci

Hi, I'm single, also & considering adoption when I'm employed again with a decent income. Get a respected, informed second opinion before rushing off to surgery for a hystererctomy. I'm praying for a good report for all your concerns: physical, emotional, challenged credit, criminal past, your everything. Your age shouldn't be a problem- 35 is grown, not old. My suggestion is to make a notation of your concerns, but don't let them overwhelm, oppress, or stop you from living. Dream a little each day and give yourself hope. Have you considered adopting an older child or a special needs child or a minority child in the U.S.? Unfortunately, most Americans consider these beautiful, loving children only after an international adoption has failed. Big Hugs and God Bless You Always.
Peaceful Journeys,
Linda S.

I AM SO EXCITED!!! I have been so lonely!I thought I was the only adopting singleton on this board!!!
Yes you can adopt as a single with some health problems! Plenty of folks do it!
Go to the sticky at the top and read the various webpage resources, esp. adoptuskids.org and nacac.org!
