I was just prescribed Met for the first time. I just filled the script. My God, the pills are huge!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can barely handle my BCP. How am I ever going to get it down??? I am terrifed of this and just the Met itself. I have heard horror stories about side effects. I am going on a cruise in a month and am scared to death to start taking this med. Any tips on easing into it? I am on 850 for a week and then 1700 next week. Do I take it with food? In the morning or at night for the first week? I generally don't eat breakfast because I am not hungry in the morning. The RE also started me on LoEstrin 24, a newly appoved BCP. I am not to keen on taking it. I just got my libido back after stopping the pill 8 months ago. TIA for your advice!

Hey Hun! This is my third week taking met, and I havent had any horrible side effects. The only time it really upset me was when I took it without food, and then it just gave me really really bad gas!(TMI I know!) The pills are really big so maybe if you cut them in half it may help. The only other thing I can think of is to grind them up and but them in yogurt, its not the easiest thing but if it helps its worth a try. I take mine at Lunch and Dinner, because I dont eat breakfast. Just make sure you take it with food in your stomach! Good Luck with everything!!
I don't think you are supposed to cut or grind up met pills - you should ask your doctor.
People make fun of the way I take pills because I have a hard time with it. I have to take a big chug of water, then put the pill way down my throat, then follow with a lot of water.
Good luck!

heather- you may be able to ask your pharmacist for smaller dosage pills, and just take the amount of them you're supposed to. When I first started met, I was working up to my full dose, and my first batch of pills were 500mg each, and were small round ones about the size of an aspirin. They were nice, because they had that coating on them that helped them slide down easier. If you talk with your pharmacist, they may be able to provide a smaller pill for you.
Also, if you feel that your body is not ready to go up to the increase in dosage, then stay there until you feel comfortable. Everyone gets used to met at a different rate. I was up to my full dose in about three weeks. Immodium Ad does help with the gastric stuff, and just avoid really greasy or fatty foods, and iceberg lettuce. Try to take your pills with food if you can. Also, met is not a time release drug, so you want to take it during the hours you'll be eating, so that it can get to work on your insulin levels. As you work up to your full dose, it's best to spread it through the day as best you can. I take mine at b-fast and dinner.

I switched to the version of met called GLYCON. They are much smaller than the met pills and they are coated...way easier to swallow and no fishy smell like some brands. Definetly talk to your pharmacy.
Good luck!

If you are taking extended release, Fortamet pills are smaller than generic met and are round and easier to swallow. I had been taking fortamet and I was shocked at the size of the generic met extended release when I switched.
