I am going to have palate surgery and my tonsils out in Jan to treat sleep apnea. I was wondering if anyone else here has experienced this surgery or other treatments for apnea and if so, how things went?
I was dx w/SA in May. I currently use a CPAP as dr wants to leave surgery as last resort.
It's a little annoying sometimes but for the most part it's a tremendous help. I was already to the point where heart problems were around the corner so I'm thankful I switched to a competent dr who knew what was wrong with me.
G/L with the surgery. I do have a friend who had the surgery and he didn't notice a difference w/his SA until he lost weight. So it didn't really help him.
Have you tried using a CPAP? PM me if you'd like.

Having your tonsils out for sleep apnea - that is interesting. I know I have sleep apnea although I have never been to a sleep clinic to confirm. Let me know if it helps.

I know that when adults have their tonsils removed, the pain is apparently like nothing else here on earth...........so if you do this make sure your doc gives you advice upfront, and that you have appropriate meds for pain.

The reason for the surgery is it's supposed to help unblock the airway while you sleep.

Thanks for the replies! I am not what you would consider overweight, although I am certainly at the top of my healthy weight range. I have moderate apnea (16x per hour) Apparently the palate and tonsil surgery tends to work better for less severe cases. I have heard that the op is veeery painful, but others say its no big deal. I will expect the worst and hopefully I will be pleasantly suprised. LOL
I was dx earlier this year with moderate apnea and my doctor told me that the majority of folks are not much better off if any after the surgery and suggested the CPAP which I currently use. It took a few days to get used to it but it was worth it. I am rested now with fewer headaches when I wake up. I would at least try the CPAP before having the operation to see if it works for you.
