Default Snoring

This is actually two questions.

1. If you snore, what steps do you take to prevent it?
2. If your significant other snores, what do you do to block it out?

My DH snores to beat the band. If he gets into a deep enough sleep, it sounds like he's either strangling or trying to breathe through mud. We've tried Breathe Right strips (didn't help him and tore his nose up) and Snore Stop spray (muted it to just really raspy breathing--better, but still irritating). For blocking, I usually try to get to bed and fall asleep before he gets in (it only really bothers me if it wakes me up or keeps me up), but if I can't do that, it's earplugs (which can hurt if worn too much) or sleeping in the other room.

I try to nudge him to sleep on his side, but he always ends up sleeping on his back or his stomach. It's just so frustrating, especially since lately I've had a hard time falling asleep anyway, and when I just finally start to drift off.....SNNNNERRRRKKKKXXXX!!! grumblegrowlhrmph.

Help!!
A sleepless Zeo

Get him in to the dr!! this sounds like Sleep Apnea. Has he ever stopped snoring (breathing) for a bit then really gurgled or was like he was gasping? It can cause heart attacks!! the best treatment now is a CPAP machine it blows air through his nose at a constant pressure to keep his air passages open. I have been using one for 3 years now & it has made a MAJOR difference in my life.
Tc & let us know what a sleep study says

Just found a link for you

Sometimes it gets that way, if he gets deep enough into sleep. I want him to get tested for sleep apnea, but I don't know what or where to go for an appointment. He can tell in the morning if he's been snoring badly because his throat will be raw when he wakes up.

I know its horrible, but I jab my husband with my elbow when his snoring is making it so I cant sleep. Luckily, he is generally a heavy sleeper so it doesnt actually wake him up, it just makes him move. Then I just hope I fall asleep before he starts snoring again. Otherwise, its the elbowing again.

Chaque, I used to kick my husband when he snored! We later agreed I'd try not to do that.

I talked to him last night about it; now I just need to decide on a PCP and get appointments for us for physicals.

Both Dh and I snore. It got worse the heavier we got. Hopefully by losing some weight, it will be getting better. I have snored most of my life. I can't breath when I am flat on my back, so I sleep with extra pillows. My boobs are big enough that they will actually choke me, lol. So, camping sucks for me!!

anglewormm, lol I try to sleep on my left side because I can breathe better....I've always snored too, I remember my senior trip I asked my roomies if I snored bad, and they said no.....it was hard to fall asleep, so I would listen to see if they fell asleep first, then I would drift away....same in college....I told my roomie I had to sleep with the radio on....she didn't care...I would set the sleep timer and try to relax.....I know a lot of people who fall asleep right away, but I usually takes me and hour or more, unless I'm really tired and it takes about a 1/2 hour.

Your story sounds exactly what I go through, My husband does the same thing he finally went into the doctor about a month ago and the doctor gave him a spray to open up is passage way and another spray for allergies and said that it should go away in atleast 2 weeks but it never helped. He still snores and it is soooo loud, now he has to call the doctor back up and try to go to a specialist. But I know what you are going through I have the same problem, My hubby did hear about that breathing machine called snore pac believe it is called or the doctor said that maybe surgery to take tissue out of the passage way to open up the air flow. I hope whatever it is that it works, we have also used the breathe right strips, no snore spray I think it was called nothing has worked yet not even the prescriptions that he got frm the doctor. Let me know how it goes with your hubby if he finds out anything new to help him out.

My DH used to snore all the time. I was worried that he had the apnea. He was using Breathe Right strips, but they hurt his nose after continued use. I also couldn't get him to stay on his side when sleeping - he is a stomach sleeper.
He mentioned it to our naturopath and she said that loosing weight should help. She put him on a diet (due to candida issues) and told him to start exercising a min of 30 minutes a day - he dropped 20 lbs.
Amazingly, after the first week on the diet, his snoring stopped completely.
Now he only snores if he has sugar, alcohol, or something he is allergic/sensitive to (wheat, corn, and chocolate to name a few).
I would recommend getting checked for allergies / food sensitivities, as well as incorporating exercise daily. Even loosing 10 lbs (if overweight) can make a difference.

I can never get the breath rite strips to stay on...my nose is too oily I guess, but if they did stay on I can breath so much better....have used those plug in things for colds with the vapor and that has helped too!!! except the room smells like menthol.....

Oh, another thing: if your fella has lots of nose hair have him give them a trim. That helps too.
