Well after 3 months of waiting i finally went to see the consultant for my results... i waited for an hour before going in for a 3 minute conversation. He said my ovaries are cystic on the left but nothing to warrant being called polycystic ovaries. He then said you should be fine to conceive (which obviously is great) but then he said basically there is nothing wrong with me!!! BUT I STILL DONT HAVE PERIODS!!! (said i!) he then said oh thats just down to your pill... i said out of the ten years i have had periods (i was a late starter) i have only been on the pill abuot 8 months because it didnt agree with me.. and all he did was... kind of shrug his shoulders, discharged me and said he was writing to inform my GP...i came out SO ANGRY AND DISSAPOINTED... because although i dont have pcos according to him... i still dont know whats wrong with me. i dont see how i could conceive if i dont have periods. can anyone help? im feeling really fed up

That seems weird, Hellypep. From what I understand, you can have the actual syndrome of PCOS without having PCAO (Polycystic Appearing Ovaries.) A syndrome is a collection of symptoms, rather than a cut and dried test result.
I also understand that for ovaries to be polycystic in appearance, an ovary needs to have at least ten cysts.
In saying that, maybe you should explore other avenues. Have you had any other tests done? Other conditions can cause missed periods.

Did you have your GP do some blood work to see how your levels are? testosterone and all that? Somewhere on the boards i think there is a list of what levels to look for in your blood work. Maybe one of the other cysters can be more helpful in telling you where that is.
Remember that this has been a long standing problem. Some docs just dont want to diagnose PCOS. So i would statr with some simple blood work. Did the consutant order blood work? If so maybe you can ask for a copy of the results and if not ask your GP to do blood work.
Good luck!

YOu need to see a different doctor and get a second opinion. I don't get periods, either, and they never said it could be anything BUT PCOS. I'm sure there are other causes, but you need to find out what it is.

Don't you love those appointments, btw?
Thats almost how it was with my RE except I got ten minutes of lectures about how I need to lose weight before we think about having kids!

I now realise that my first post looked as if I was focusing on the facts- which were more in your favour than his- because I wasn't sure how much righteous indignation I could get away with on this board. In addition to doubting the accuracy of his information, I am mad for you!
As others have said, it sounds like this specialist is hugely overworked and was only too happy to rush you off the conveyor belt, since you didn't fit into his textbook. Don't quit until you get an answer that makes sense to you.

I too was diagnosed based on blood work only. I think you need to give that Dr a reality check. I would find a different dr and see if they would do the blood work.
Thank you for all your replies. the consultant discharged me.. wont be doing anymmore tests... so im back where i was .. totally confused dont know where to go

The medical system is so different in the UK, so we American cousins may not be the best ones to give you advice. Most of us can basically call up any doctor we want and make an appointment. Can you see another doctor on your own, or do you have to have a referral from your GP? You could do some google searches about physicians who treat PCOS in your area. Can your GP run bloodwork for PCOS? Take him some of links that can be found on this message board that talk about the blood tests normally run for PCOS and the resulting ranges for someone with PCOS. I assume you are allowed to have a gyn separate from your GP. Sometimes they are more up-to-date on PCOS than GPs. In the meantime, while you work through the medical system, you might want to try something like the Insulin Resistance Diet, South Beach or others mentioned on the Diet & Exercise board. There are cysters who have gotten their period & pregnant just by eating foods that keep their insulin under control and exercising.
It sounds like to me that you need a second opinion and then I would find a new specialist!! Any doctor that I go into and they make me feel unimportant I never go back. And just from what I have read from the other woman you can not be diagnosed with blood work alone someone should order you a ultrasound pelvic and then they do an outside one and then they have a probe that goes inside that is really the only true way to know that you have PCOS because then they can get pictures of the ovaries all the way around when it comes to your health it is all about you and if the doctor is not all about you get another one that is the advice I can give besides keep your head up and keep smiling!! Wife to Victor 45 me 28 PCOS 1998 Adopting in November one fur baby Diamond little chihuahua
That is very similar to what happened to me last week!! My doctor told me that I could possibly have a case of mild PCOS (no periods and cysts). According to my bloodwork, she has no idea why I do not get my periods, so she just put me on the pill!!
I was diagnosed two weeks ago. I have PCO but normal blood test! When my periods stopped in january I went to the doc after 4 months she was convinced that I was ''just not ovulating'' which she says a lot of women dont. I kind of thought she was trying to fob me off but she did arrange for a scan which confirmed PCOS. I was releived that I had an answer! (BTW Ive started doing weight watchers and lost a stone and my periods have started again which I m pleased about).
Remeber you pay your tax and ni so you are within your rights to expect an answer. GPs are just general practioners and know just a little about everything. There are specialists out there and I would be suprised if you werent entiltled to see one on the NHS.
Also, my doctor told me that periods are hormonal and do not depend on ovulation. I dont know if that is true but I know you can have periods and still not ovulate x
