Question SO...BCPs

Hey Ladies,

I'm getting confused about how BCPs work...So they give you a period, which isn't really a period? So technically, I still won't have my period, well a real period? I'm sorry I'm new to this whole BCP and PCOS thing, and I just started on Alesse yesterday. Does metformin help give you your period??? Thanks for the help!

PLEASE - DO NOT TAKE ALESSE!!! Alesse is the worst bcp out there for pcos girls. I even heard they are thinking of taking it off the market. it is HIGHLY androgenic - meaning its full of testosterone - which pcos girls don't need. i was on it and it nearly ruined my life. caused bad IR anmd made my hair fall out in clumps, which has never recovered. THROW IT OUT!!!!!!

I would avoid any of the pills similar to alesse as well...

Generic Name: ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel
Brand Names: Alesse, Aviane, Levlen, Levlite, Levora, Tri-Levlen, Triphasil, Triphasil-28, Trivora,

Part of the way BCPs work is that they prevent you from ovulating. So, the lining in your uterus doesn't build up, and therefore there really isn't anything to have a period with. What I learned here on SC is that the "period" on BCPs is actually a withdrawal symptom of not having the medication in your system. This is a good thing for women with PCOS because there's nothing to fret about if your period is still a bit irregular, or skips a month or two - because the lining hasn't built up, you won't have an increased risk of cervical dysplasia.

Metformin can help with ovulation so yes, a period on Metformin would be a "real" period. But as I said, there's really no reason to worry about it if you're on BCPs.

With that said...I think you should form your own opinion about Alesse or similar BCPs. Not to discredit anyone's personal experience - especially because it would make sense from a medical standpoint - but I think these issues go on an individual basis. I currently take a form of ethinyl estradiol/levonorgestrel and don't have any of those problems.
