I was diagnosed with PCOS in May 2007 by my OB/GYN and am not sure what to do. He prescribed me with Metaformin, but I had an allergic reaction and had to stop taking it. When I went back before the recomended 3 months he flat out refused to prescribe me with anything new because I didn't let the medication take its full course. Needless to say I haven't been back since and have been trying to go at it alone. That has not been working out well at all. I work out all the time and since May I have gained 37 lbs. I am also struggling with excessive sweating and hair growth. HELP!!!!!
welcme to sc sorry that the dr was so horrible to you!! Could you see a different dr instead? i personally had to change dr to get some help with my pcos

Welcome to the group. I second (or third) the idea of trying to find a new Dr. We just recently changed insurance and my new OB/Gyn in Nov. completely blew off all of my concerns since DH and I are putting off having children for a year or two yet. I went to my new PCP and he was super receptive and ran some basic tests, when those came back fine he still referred me to an Endo and that is where I got my Dx.

I am going to reiterate what the other ladies have said. Find a new dr ASAP!! When I was on Met, it made me puke constantly. My first dr refused to change it and said that's what it does. I knew that was wrong. I was throwing up so bad that my eyes were bloodshot. So, I found me an RE. It doesn't necessarily have to be an RE, you may find a good OB. But, there are different types of Metformin like the extended release version (which I am now on) that may work for you. There is also Fortamet, Actos, and others. The hair growth and weight gain is something that many of us go through. It's our hormones all out of wack. If you can find a better medication, it will definitely help with that once it kicks in.
Also, consider going on a lower carb diet. You can start small even by not necessarily "dieting" but just start making some life changes and cutting out some sweets, reducing carbs, eating more protein...These small things are big in our book because of our PCOS. Check out the diet and exercise section and also the section on medications on SC. There are some wonderful "stickies" and threads that can get you started.
Know that we have all been where you are. It does get easier and you will start to understand your body more. Your first step...find another dr that cares enough about you to let you take charge and have your Metformin changed.
Please let me know if you have any questions or I can help you at all
