I just started seeing another OBGYN who has refused to put me on any medications until she gets an ultrasound of my liver due to my enzymes being elavated. While waiting to set this up I was taken to the emergency room with chest pains. The doctor at the ER said that he thought my pains were indigestion related and put me on Prilasec (sp?) I go to my family doctor for a follow up and now he wants to run a scope down my throat, do an ultrasound of my gallbladder, liver, and other organs, and wants me to do a stress test. With all of this...my family still wonders why I hate going to the doctors. I mean this doctor is going to make me run on a treadmill till I about pass out or have a heartattack first. Does my family doctor not realize that I am overweight and out of shape, does he want to kill me? This scares me so bad because my uncle went into a massive heart attack during a stress test in 1996 and died. Has anyone else had this, how bad is it? I am about to go crazy thinking about this, and my doctor says to just relax it will be ok. Any information would be appreciated.

Mel,
My first question is how long have you been going to this doctor? Are you comfortable with him? I does not sound like you are. I would suggest switching doctors & seek a 2nd opinion. All of these tests may be unneccessary (or they may be). Seeking a 2nd opinion before going through them all would be my recommendation. Also, you should have a doctor in which you are comfortable with.
The stress test is probably to make sure your heart is okay, since you were taken to the hospital for chest pains. Did they do an Echo Cardio Gram? Have you told your doctor your fear about doing the stress test since you are overweight, out of shape & your uncle's death (I'm so sorry)? I have not had a stress test done myself, but my mother & stepfather have, and they said it was not bad (they are both overweight & out of shape). I think they only had to do the treadmill for a few minutes.
Let us know how you make out & what you decide. Good luck.

grrrr i hate doing all these tests!!! i have not had that one,, but i did have the scope, as i have acid reflux.... it is not bad at all.... they give me something that makes you really sleepy but doesn't knock you right out...spray your throat with some numbing stuff, and you have to swallow a tub thingy, that has a camera on it,,, i only remember them telling me to swallow the tub,, after that waking up in the recovery room. throat was a little sore after but that's it.
I had a stress test about a month ago (with an echocardiogram and Electrocardiogram) due to chest pains. I was on the treadmill a total of 3 minutes. They told me my heart rate had to get up to 167 beats a minute and then I'd be done. I said "OK, this won't take long then!" My heart is noramlly fast and speeds up really fast because I am out of shape. My heart rate got to 187 in one minute flat, but I had to stay on, because they do the test in increments of three minutes. It turned out that my heart was fine. The cardiologist said it was probably musculo-skeletal pain.
